OFFSET HOLE IN SPRAY BAR/ NVA ?
« on: July 17, 2008, 06:37:25 AM »
Hello again from a Brit ex-pat in S.W.France.

Advice please ...... I have a Magnum 36 which is converted to C/L with an O.S.SPRAY BAR / NVA .

The hole is set to one side as the unit is too narrow .
I shall be replacing the NVA soon  with a longer unit.

In the meantime : Will an offset hole affect the overall stunt performance ?

I have run the engine in and it doesn't show any signs of poor running on the bench.

Also , the Magnum 36 AND the Thunder Tiger 36 appear the same ?

I'm sure this isn't the case , but any tips about operating a stock Thunder Tiger converted to C/L  would be appreciated .

very much obliged ,

Robin.

There is some interesting reading about the Thunder Tiger - OS Max - Magnum trio.  If it's all strictly truthful or not, is another thing.  The version I saw originally included a named individual, though, which made it seem more like a real story.

It went like this: the chief engineer at O.S. when the FP and FSR were designed was a Taiwanese citizen, and he returned to Taiwan to lend his talents to the company there that would be bringing out the Thunder Tiger.  He or someone decided to clone the OS originals as closely as possible, so parts swaps were possible.  The TT engines had the same running characteristics as the OS engines.

When some import contract was up for renewal, the mainland China company for the Magnum enginies recruited the same engineer once again, but this time the clones were not quite as exactly interchaneable with the originals.  The running characteristics, however, remained very similar to those of the OS Max engines.

It is a very plausible story.

In my experience an offset spraybar hole doesn't make noticeable difference on an upright or inverted engine.  On a side mounted engine it is a matter of getting the tank correctly positioned (wherever that may be) vertically in relation to the hole.  I have done the experiment of swapping spraybars and moving the hole up and down on a side mounted engine

One-eye, your story may be correct regarding the mainland-made Magnums.

However, there was a time when Thunder Tiger and Magnum engines came out of the same factory in Taiwan. The last of the iron piston engines and the first series of ABC/ABN? engines with the GP prefix for both brands are the engines affected. I have examples of both to confirm this info.

The mainland-made Magnums appear to be different to the latest Thunder Tigers but I cannot be more positive because I do not have any of the latest models.

Cheers

Geoff

My Magnum .36 XLIIS (compact with square head) is significantly different in size and lay out from the Thunder Tiger/Aero Tiger .36 (which uses the Thunder Tiger case).
 ???  ???

I have an OLD Magnum .36 which is similar to the TT .36, byut that Magnum is the old version.
