OS Max 35
« on: January 08, 2011, 10:17:59 AM »
Didn't want to hijack the other thread . I have an OS engine , on the side of the case it says MAX-S, below that is  O S , and below that in a raised boss is 35. Is this the 35S that people refer to? It also is equipped with a RC carb attached by two small screws coming in from the side. It seems to have good comp. and .008" end play on the crank.

Hi Gordon,

Yes, it's an OS .35S. You can get a venturi and NVA from Leonard Neumann (stuka stunt); perhaps Randy Smith (Aero Products) and Lee's machine shop has them also. I have a reworked .35S that has a teflon insert in the crankpin to reduce the play, but I am not aware of any vendor that provides them.

Best regards,

Damian

Hi Gordon,

Like Damian said, that beeessss the one.  There is no difference in the R/C version other than the obvious carb versus venturi/NVA.  Take the screws out holding the carb and replace with C/L parts.  Getting the "original factory NVA" is becoming harder, but there are many other aftermarket NVAs that work perfectly.

Very positive that Randy has everything to set it up.

Gordon, Stuka Stunt Works has a good supply of OEM needle valve assemblies and venturies for the OS S-series. Contact Leonard.

The piston pin for the os 35fp which comes with the teflon insert in the crank pin is an exact fit for the os35s if you needed a new crank pin also.

Hi Gentlemen, this is my first post(of any kind) and if I'm not at the right place please tell me.  I have the same OS 35S with a venturi.  It has not been started in 30 years and I need to get it running again.  Cooked it a crock pot and antifreeze, but the compression is lacking.  Also have a Fox 35 that is older than me (61) and in the same shape as me and the OS.  Just started building again after 45 years.  Any help and opinions on restoring engines, and which would be best for the Skyray I'm building would be appreciated.  I can't tell you what a joy it is to get back into the hobby (obsession!) of CL stunt again and to find some of my heros are still here.

Hi Gordon
You do not need the pin in the crankshaft..if .. you have the steel spacer washer behind the drive washer, If not I would look for one, I should have them here

I have a good supply of RODs for that motor, I have PA  NVAs for that engine that are far better than stock. by the way the OS 35 FP NVA does NOT work in this motor unless modified , the Stock NVA was .157 diameter so the NEW 35 FP OS LA ones are from a 20 and are much much smaller diameter that the OS 35 S
I also have many other parts such as cranks, but i DO NOT have any piston \ sleeves for them.

HI Steve,

Between the two engines you have, I would use the OS .35S.   Mainly because the Fox .35 often has a case of the "burps" when mounted sidewinder ion a profile.  Just make sure the wrist pin is not stuck on the rod.  You will get some compression back when you use the recommended all castor fuel, at least 20% castor, 25% castor would probably be better for yours since it is a touch down on compression.  I would probably start with a 10-5 prop.

Thanks Bear, I have often wondered why OS gained so much popularity back when.... I think this engine has some good compression and if I can remember how to start one, I will be elated.
Again thanks for the help you offer on this blog.
