Hello All:
I was given a Fox .50? that was gummed badly with some type of dried oil. I disassembled the engine and cleaned the parts as best that I could. All went well until I installed the rear bearing. This bearing makes a noise and has a bit of drag when it is spun in the engine. Outside of the engine, the bearing sounds good but not perfect.
Perhaps I did not remove all of the "varnish" from the bearing. I boiled the bearing in dishwasher detergent, used an ultrasonic cleaner with the same strong detergent and soaked it in carb cleaner. Can I use a solvent other than water in an ultrasonic cleaner? If so, what works well? I have no idea as to how to clean the bearing other than soaking it in some type of aggressive solvent for a long period of time. Perhaps I can find a replacement bearing. What are your thoughts about running the bearing as it is?
Suggestions?
Tia,

If I were you I would change out the bearing/bearings if you are planning on usung the motor.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure they say.
here is the link to Boca Bearing for the motor (Fox 50)

Castor has some acidity and if it's been in the bearing a long time you're probably hearing the balls running over the pitting from corrosion. If it's just dried castor then Castrol Super Clean is a strong alkaline that will melt dried castor no problem.
After run while the engine's still hot, disconnect the fuel line then take 75% naptha 25% ATF squirt some in the venturi and run the prime off, do this 3 times. It will flush out the nitro and castor and leave everything coated with ATF. On my iron pistons I put one more drop of atf on the piston and work it in. Don't let castor dry out in your bearings.

Hi Frank
just buy a new bearing, that bearing is not worth using, also stay away from powerful dish washing agents, I have seen many of them rust/corrode steel bearings, and many will tell you to never put a bearing in an ultrasonic cleaner, it damages the balls and race.
If you want to clean them, use Berry's carb cleaner in the dip can, or Green Antifreeze in a crock pot, then immediatly wash and oil the parts

Hi All:
Thanks for the replies. I think Randy has the correct idea. Now to find a bearing supply house in my area.
What am I going to do with this engine when I get it running? Lol
Be well my friends,

Unless you go exotic with ceramic, the BOCA bearings, (even the cheap set) are priced OK, pretty good, fit, and ship fairly fast
