Which Stock 61 is Best for Stunt ?
« on: September 24, 2010, 01:04:34 PM »
Greetings fellas.
Moving up to a 61 soon I hope.

Is there a good 'stock' 61 out there that would make a good Sunday Sport engine ?

Sort of the 61 equivalent to my OS 46 LA ?

Sadly I don't have the funds for a thoroughbread like one of Randy's great PA  engines.

Would appreciate your input ,

Robin.

For the 60 size ships
Enya 61 SE
Enya 61 RE
ST 51
Magnum 52
Magnum 53
Are  just a few of the good motors out there that will pull a 61 size ship

In addition to those above, think about an old Merco 61. Just about as good as the Super Tiger V60 and they can be picked up for a song, unlike the ST60!
Even better is Ian Russell's ABC 61, based on the old Merco 61 crankcase (not the metamorph!). These can be had for less than £100 brand new. Using these, gets you away from ringed engines, which can be a real pain (Just ask Brett Buck about ringed ST 46s!).

Since I seem to be the only other modeller that can run an Evolution engine successfully, without modification, or your name has to be Dennis or something else mysteriously missing from the instructions with the engine, I'll have to get one of the 60's and see if it's luck or chance.

I have flown against Dave in a Detroit wind....I liked what I saw from the 61 ! He likes more prop pitch than I do but then again...shaking his sons hand can be akin to meeting the incredible HULK! My Gawd I am such a hobbit with a handle in my hand!

Yea and you whipped my butt...... I got a 13.25x4.25 undercambered CF from Bobby Mac. I've been wanting to try something a little shorter pitch wise. I'll let you know how it worked.. The plane I was flying likes a light prop so I under proped the engine to (re-figured 12x6 Zinger) fit the plane. The Bobby prop should be about right.....

John I have a feeling your boy can handle it...but the Legacy is a big bird....ever consider a Saturn for him? A little smaller but presents large....Ive seen this one cut some wind! ;) Slightly under propped and any conventional 60 would work on it.

John,
That might not be a bad choice.  This could be a good start for the upcoming year.  He won a kit of the Legacy from the Beginner Stunt Event last year that I believe was donated by Roy Trantham.  I am a little short on 60 sized engines and thought that this might be a good match for that airframe.  What I should do is let him drive my SV-11 around and see how he handles that one.  Maybe something in the .40-.46 range and closer to 580-630 squares might be better for the next year or so.  I would like to keep this fun and less like work.

I understand completely. Cripes he might grow quite a bit in the next year also. I still have a couple rear exhaust Stalkers...they pulled my planes around pretty well if you are interested.
I would be willing to part with one or two of them pretty cheap if you are interested. I have the 2/4 breaking version and the 2/2.

I flew the cf prop and it was a major improvement over the wood 12x6 I was flying. Very steady run with less speed up in the top of the loops. great pull at 5.4 sec (65' wires eye to eye) laps in 20 mph wind. I didn't fly much of a pattern but it pulled great through verticals.. The engine speed went up about 300 rpm (8240 - 12x6 to 8560 - 13.25x4.25 cf)) at launch over the 12x6.

Aw nice! Glad that is working for you Dave. Bobby always shows me his latest and greatest prop...then tells me they cant be had! LL~ About 15 years ago when CF props were somewhat new to stunt I spent a few seasons learning to modify wood props. Joe Reinhard is a master at reworking wood props and got me into doing this. He still does quite a few although even he has found a fondness for carbon fiber the last few years. It opened my eyes a lot. Lots of guys bolt on a few balanced woods and whatever and try to get happy with it. There is lots to be gained there in performance. CF took a lot of the need to modify a wood prop away with stiff accurate shapes and pitches from the git go. Still, re-pitching one is just a matter of some very hot water and a pitch guage. I used to scrape and hone the pitch up on woods. Took me a week to make three props that were 1/4 pitch different for different wind  and conditions. I would start with a 16" Rev-up 4 pitch...(and they were always under pitched) to get a 12 and take a low pitch prop up rather than a high pitch down so as not to lose blade mass at the TE of the prop.

Anyway, while expensive, they took a lot of labor out of my routine to marry up a prop with an engine.  H^^
