New Fox 60 Stunt Engine
« on: December 07, 2006, 08:55:35 AM »

This new engine has been available for about six months and I haven't heard much about it. Has anyone tried it yet?

There were a few at the 2006 Fly-In.

Seemed to run OK but I don't know if they were some sort of pre-production prototypes or store-bought versions.

Lou Wollard had one as I recall.

Tere were some available for purchase at Toledo, I believe. Big motor! But I doubt that the blessing from folks in the know will come quickly!

I bought one from the Silver Fox at VSC this spring....  And dthey ain't real cheap   retail at $300...   street price i've seen since is just over $200
Rather nice looking Especially for Fox!!  Essentially an AAC version of the Eagle 60 with a dedicated sprinkler venturi.  App an ounce lighter than the eagle.  I have bench run mine and it seems to be a horse!!  Very smooth running.  I think that Lew has some airtime on his by now.
Downside is a 5/16" shaft that is barely long enough to bolt on a prop...   NO way to get a spinner without a different prop nut and counter bored props....
Lew told me that his impression was that the timing was similiar to the ST 60....
Interesting that Fox came up with this on their own....   If they would have asked a few questions of some stunt flyers it would have helped a bunch, IMO

Several weeks ago, there were some pix/info of the new 60 on the Fox site, but I have not been able to find the pix/info recently.

I E-mailed Fox requesting info on the engine--will pass along anything they send.

Guys,

I just got off the phone with Charles Thacker from Fox.

He explained that Fox has had problems with subcontractors involved with chrome plating.  According to Charles, the folks in FL that were to do the plating went belly up, then the new owners of the business couldn't provide the quality necessary.

He is working with another contractor to get the plating done.  He told me he had one of the new 60's in his hand while we were talking and said he hopes to be shipping engines right after Jan. 1.

Sounds good---I hope it all works out.  I would really like to see a big Fox on one of my planes.

They will have to do something with that short crackshaft bolt if they want
to have some decent sales.  Most using a motor this big will want to use
a spinner!  Not too easy having to use a different ( specially made?? )
prop nut, AND counterboring props - not safe!!  :X
It does sound like a promising motor, if they iron out the problems!

But why the short muffler lugs again? To save weight?!

That would be my guess, at least unlike the Fox 35 these look like they are thick enough to hold a muffler.

If like Mike says this is similar to a previous Fox 1970's design, I bet that's the reason for the short lugs--they are re-using the original molds (or whatever they use to cast the crankcases.

A remake of the old Eagle, a real horse of an engine and a fine cl stunt motor...
Too bad that it is not a steel sleeve with ringed aluminum piston.....guess that I will just keep running the two Eagles that I have..... LL~
