Mounting Enya mufflers
« on: April 19, 2018, 10:07:30 AM »
A question for those in the know. Each of the older (used) Enya motors I've got on hand rely on a strap to retain the muffler, and this is the point of my question.

On two of the motors, the strap transfers the muffler load to a pair of "ears" located on either side of the cylinder and on the back of the exhaust stack. On a third motor, the strap doesn't make contact with these ears, so the load is transferred  to the back and sides of the cylinder (there's a gap between the strap ends and the ears). I'm a little concerned that I might have the wrong strap for this motor and that the load on the cylinder might cause cylinder damage. What do you think?

Thanks.

I like to drill the lugs , toss the straps and be done with it.

Hello I run a number of Enya engines some with factory mufflers with straps resting on the ears and others with Dubro universal mufflers or Tatone mufflers or the Brodak Enya 35 size mufflers none of which contact the ears but this does not seem to be a problem.
Only problem seems to be with some of them coming loose which can happen to all types. Best solution seems to be the DuBro mounting strap style with separate clamp bolt and locating tangs in the exhaust that hold it firmly and card compression strip between the cylinder and strap. The Brodak muffler/stack works well on the 29, 35 as it locates top and bottom of the exhaust stack to stop it sliding about but as a result will not fit the 45 (6001 or 6002) without modification.
Even JB weld or silicon sealer don't seem to stop them loosening once they start to move about and round out the surfaces of the muffler and exhaust stack.
Bolt on is best as stated by Brad but even they seem to come off at times if you fly them enough and get a bit of vibration going .
Regards Gerald

Hmm..., it sounds like the bigger problem here is just keeping the mufflers on and that cylinder distortion is the least of my concerns. Thanks for the enlightenment.

Fortunately I do have one of the OS 703 units on hand mounted to an OS 35. I could use that if needed.

Drilling the lugs for bolt-on would be sweet, though beyond the capability of my shop tools. There's probably a specialty machinist in the area who could do the job.

So, I think I'll just mount the mufflers in the usual fashion and  just hope for the best on each one. At least you've each given me some good fall-back options. Many thanks.
