« on: July 03, 2020, 07:00:31 PM »
Does anyone recall which Stunt News issue included a Derek Picard review of the Moki 51? Appreciate any help with this; thanks!

Hello,
Have you problems, or questions with MOKI-51?
I use them since 2000.

Fairly certain that any review by Pickard would originally have been in ACLN newsletter so I'll try to dig it up but in the meantime I've just gone through my old Airborne magazines to find a review done by Brian Winch in issue 143 of May 1996. I've just finished scanning it so go to http://sceptreflight.com/Model%20Engine%20Tests/Moki%20M51%20CL.html

I've always been very hesitant to use any of BW's "tests" because they're full of verbiose garbage but I've made an exception this time :).

A Moki .51 review by Derek Picard is in Stunt News July/August 1995 edition, pg 76.
Check your email, Bill.

You ain't just whistling Dixie! That's some affectation, trying to sound like PGF Chinn, but in the 90's, not the 50s/60s. I love reading them, some of the reactions of "still in rationing" Great Britain to something like a Cox Thermal Hopper or Olympic 15 sound like it could have manifested out of the aether from another dimension.

Most of these reviews are interesting historical time capsules, but for the most part, tell you nothing important about how they would work in the intended application.  This one uses the  "stunt timing numbers" gambit to make it seem like the test had shown it to be a good stunt engine - which is utterly impossible to determine without extensive in-flight evaluation by a stunt expert, typically taking months or years of careful testing - not some bench running one afternoon.

And certainly not possible to determine from "timing numbers", given that the same reasoning rejects some of the best stunt engines ever used, which were summarily dismissed by one notable as having "classic radio numbers" - despite the fact that the engines in question managed to win 5 US NATS in a row and a world championship immediately before the article was written!  It's hard to be that oblivious.

Not really a warning, I was merely commenting on the Winch engine review, it may well be right as far as it goes, but there is nothing much useful to evaluate its value as a stunt engine.

The problem with stunt engine reviews would be that by the time we realize something is a good stunt engine, it's discontinued!

I see you e=mailed Istvan Travnik. Smart move, since the rest of the experts just speculated and poo=poo'ed any test results or numbers given by anyone. Since Istvan has been flying that engine in a stunt airplane competitively since 2000 you might want to give his input priority.

Dear friends,
Brett has quite right about the recensions of journalists, mostly in case of stunt engines.
The story, ("curriculum vitae") of MOKI-51 is literally a "long and winding road", since it appeared still in late of 1987.
We (top 5 Hungarians) got 2-2 pieces for free, but looking at problematic behaviour, everybody remained by their ST 46 or ST 60s. (I by HP-40s).  They immediately sold their pieces to abroad, just me reserved mines, as mechanically very good quality basement, for the future.
Leaders of MOKI -regarding to fiasco- modified the rest 2-300 pieces and sold them en gros to Australia and Canada, many of them with R/C carburettor.
I started to modify step-by step, and after ten years I put into my very first "big" plane, flying on fullsize lines, to my first WChs, in 2000. Now I can state that it can substitute fully a good ST-60. My colleagues (their team won European Ch in 1993)  fly electric now: they never loved to play with mechanical engineering things, and they have right.

One of the best out of the box engines every made, only 200 were made ... I have one NIB and one used ... they aren't cheap ... I saw one sell for over $500 on eBay ... the 2-4-2 is sweet ...
