I once had a Kumar-produced "Indian Mills 1.3cc". At least it ran, on a 10x3.5 Top Flite paddle blade. I held it in my hand to run it, and wasn't skeered in the slightest.  LL~ The thing the "Indian Mills" had going for it was long stroke/small bore. The piston speed goes up radically as the stroke, making piston fit less critical. And, FWIW, it is said that the Mills Brothers produced engines (England) weren't much better made.

The Katipo was optimistically designed with a modern short stroke, and the piston fits of the samples just weren't up to the task. There should always be some suspicion of engines assembled from leftover parts...very likely rejects.

Tolerances for model engine parts are shockingly tight in the world of commercial machine shops and yes, even "ArrowSpace" (sic) shops.  y1 Steve

Reminds me of the Deezil, sold by Gotham Hobbies in the 50s.   n~

Anyone remember them?

I still have mine somewhere - never could get it to run.

There used to be casting kits available to build reproduction Deezils (there may still be).  It was the only full-scale reproduction casting set the guy offered.  Normally he didn't offer full-scale castings because he didn't want to be a party to someone counterfeiting a vintage engine -- but in the case of the Deezil, he figured that if you built one that actually ran people would understand that it couldn't be an original.

When we were about 11 , two teenagers used to get their jeans covered in fuel & blood , would get two or four flights , with two staggering around , sagging and colaposing .
Next summer when it would actually start and stay going they lost intrest , as it was no challene . :## or maybe it just BROKE ( I think this may be correct ) .
Later they took up something safer .

OURS - the hobby shops used to porn them off - no wonder theres no aeromodellors - They Wouldnt GO . :P

After ever lad and a few of their fathers had tried to beat it for three months , and lost intrest  LL~ it mightve been Run In , From FLICKING . And I manadged to start it . One warm day - Indoors .

A Irdiut Teacher bought one and a plane . Got good value for the generous 20 bucks ea for ' build and test '.
A Mechanic with a DB5 refitted it , the brother motored it over for hgours on a 3/4 horse drill , dripping motor oil in the intake .
It went like an Oliver & Started Easilly . Her Boyfriend manadge to start it . No Trouble . :o :o and was very pleased with it .

A easy 40 Hrs Work all up , for $ 40 .  S?P LL~ LL~ LL~ My mission was ' the Plane ' , the Brothers ' The Engine' . Didnt see him for a week there . LL~ LL~ %^@ Oh Dear .

Probly one of the few well behaved ' Examples ' extant .  LL~ :(

Now now, here in New Zealand we make fine things, mostly wine chocolate and things made from sheep.

I had a Katipo 1.5cc when I was a kid. It wasn't a bad little engine.

I believe they were quite widely used here in their day. But their day was a long time ago indeed.

Try about 50/50 mix of ether and castor oil. If you get it running, have the video camera nearby to record such a historical event.

FWIW, I was told by a friend in California that a typical "Indian Mills 1.3" would turn a 10 x 3.5 TF at the same rpm as an O&R .23. I think that's probably true enough, but I don't know what rpm that might be.  :X Steve
