Breaking in a ringed engine
« on: April 14, 2007, 06:50:41 PM »
OK all you engine Guru's; I just started breaking in an old new Anderson Spitfire 65 that has never been run. This is a ringed engine, and it has been a long time since I have done a ringed one. I am running it in on glow fuel, 5% nitro, 28% castor, and with the spark plug. So far I have about 45 min. on it running fairly rich with the timing retarded. It still seems pretty tight, but is loosening up some. Is it about the same amount of time as a lapped one, or do ringed engines take longer? If I get it to the point that it will hold a good 2 stroke at full advance without slowing down, would that indicate it is pretty well broken in? Thanks for all replys.

Just go with what your doing, I've got 2 of these one lapped & the other ringed, still have them. If done right, you really can't wear them out, mine are 46 years old, and still run great. I would wear ear plugs, as they are really LOUD!! Oh, they shake like like the dickens. y1

Thanks for the reply Walter; I also have a lapped 60 in my Taurus that pulls all 850 sq." and 70 oz. very well. It doesn't shake to badly, but the front end of the Taurus is pretty beefy and wide for a lot of support. I really think my Super Cykes shake more than the Spitfire. I generally plug off about 1/3rd of the ventura when running glow fuel, and still have plenty of power and good suction. When I get the new one broken in I will stick it in the Taurus and see how it compares to the lapped 60.

That's an interesting observation, as I think my Super Cykes are much smoother. I learned to fly on a Veco Chief w/a Cyke .60 on glow.

You may very well be right Walter. I have only had my Cyke on smallish planes, such as the Yates Dragon, and it shook the mounts out of it a couple of times. I did have the Cyke in a Viking for a while, and I don't believe it shook bad in that.
