ST60 venturi size
« on: July 09, 2016, 07:44:34 AM »
I have an st60 converted from RC with what looks like a delrin venturi. The size is approx 5/32 in.
The model is a saturna v60 with no muffler lugs.

Is the size of the venturi about right? What fuel do you recommend for this engine?

Thanks for any info you can provide about the engine.

Regards,

-Dan

Hello Daniel,
                  I have several ST V.60's
and I've had a lot of success with them.

One has a Tom Lay venturi and one is a
box stock engine. All of my engines have
the spraybar through the centre of the bore.
They measure

7.41 mm   or 19/64" or .292 of an inch

  Another has the factory venturi
and it measures

7.82 mm  or  5/16"  or .310 of an inch.

You might also want to know that I'm
using mufflers made from Du-Bro muffler
extrusions. You just buy it at hobby shops.
I can tell you how to make them if you're curious.

Cheers! - Keith Morgan

I use a .205"  venturi with a spicket ( short  )   20% all synthetec fuel. Thunderbolt RC long plug.  Lots of guys won't try my setup because it's wrong but it works for me. High pitch prop 12-7 lower RPM around 8,000 ground release.

Thank for the info guys.

Keith, I think I have the same diameter as your first engine... .292in.

What fuel (oïl and nitro content) do you run in your engines?

I am curious about your muffler setup Keith. Can you show and tell with pictures?

Thanks!

Hello Daniel,
I'm not sure if the S.T. V.60 "chromed'
sold for RC has the same porting as the C/L version.
I would see if anyone knows for sure.

In your picture, the spray bar is passing through the
edge of the venturi opening. That's common and correct
for the S.T. C/L engines, but the venturi bore would need
to be smaller to achieve the same intake area as my
engines with the spray bar through the middle.
Someone else might know exactly the correct bore for
that set up.

   " THE" propeller for the S.T.V.60 is a Rev-Up 13-6
but you'll probably never find one. At least ten
people have told me that's the best prop.
I've also had good results with a 13-6 Zinger Pro.

   I use PowerMaster GMA 10% nitro - 22% oil 50/50
castor /synthetic when I can get it but the Snooper Sniger
also seems to like Omega 10% nitro (17% oil) with enough
castor added to bring the oil up to 22%.
Iron cylinder, ringed engines seem to like castor.
Don't let the case fool you. The S.T. V.60 does not have
a chromed bore. I think the crank might be plated?
I dunno.

I use a Fox R/C long plug. It has an idle bar, and so far,
it has been flawless.

I'm attaching an ELWYN AUD picture of my Enigma.  You can see
the muffler clearly. It's a two inch long piece of Du-Bro
muffler stock which I buy at hobby shops. It's seems
easy to get. I drill 10 holes 2.7mm diameter as the picture
shows.
The S.T. muffler lug spacing is exactly 1.5 inches, so
I drill and tap #4-40 holes on both ends of the extrusion
and cap one end with an aluminum plate.
I install a pressure tap half way along on the other side
from the exhaust holes.
I don't know the weight off hand, but it's a light enough.
I could weigh it for you.
I have not been happy with commercially available
tongue mufflers made for the S.T.-60. I think they lack
volume and they are much louder. I'm certain that the
Du-Bro type works much better.
I've just made a 2.5" muffler to see if a bit more
volume is even better. I'll report back after I've tested it.

Cheers! - K.

If you can find one a Bolly 13 x 6  is the best we  ever found, a Bolly  12.5 x  5  2 blade  and Bolly 12 x 6n 3 blade  are excellent too

The ST 60  use  a  .181 - .195  venturie hole , or a  .280 - .310  in a resrtictor, depending on the head type
use 23%  oil  1/2 castor fuel 10 nitro
13 x 6 launch about 8600 rpms
Most of the  early ST 60s  were chromed, they were also very thin sleeves
the ST 60s mostly all  had "Chromed" molded into the case, Most all of the later  runs were not chromed, even though they said they were
I never saw a chromed crank, and I setup near 700 of these

regards
Randy
