Title: Magnum .44
Post by: Phil Bare on March 10, 2015, 12:38:10 PM
Hello all.
In going through a box of stuff that I bought from a guy getting out of the hobby, I happened to find a Magnum .44 engine.
This engine is an RC version with a carb on it. I cleaned it up a little and bolted it down on my test stand, squirted a good prime in the carb and flipped it over a few times.. I hooked up a tank and filled it with 10 22 and hooked up the battery. The engine started on the first flip, sat there and ran like it new what it was doing.
I had grabbed up an 11 x 6 prop and stuck on it for test purposes.
It seemed perfectly happy turning that prop at what I think is some pretty high revs. I ran a five oz. tank through it just playing with the throttle, adjusting NV, putting the muffler on and etc, etc,.
It seems to be very powerful as well as pretty easy handling.
What I would like to know is it worth messing with converting to CL and any thing that anybody can tell me about it. The engine is in very nice condition and doesn't seem to have much time at all on it.
Any help and info would be appreciated.

Hi Phil,

I have a Magnum .44 which works great.  It was worked on by Tom Dixon (I believe) though so it isn't "stock".  Don't know what he did to it.

Thanks Bill, What sort of run does it have? What prop do you use on it?
The one I have just seemed to run well on the test stand and seems to have good power.

Hi Phil

I setup hundreds of the Older Magnums, 40s and 44, these are  GPs  These were made by Thunder Tiger, and not Chinese made.. before that company was formed, they make great stunt engines, and have a nice 4/2 run, or you can use higher RPMs  if wanted, they are pretty powerful and will turn a 12 x 5 props, I used them on Chipmunk , Acko sized stunters, and had other using them on full size Vectors. use 23%  oil half castor, and whatever nitro that is needed, normally 5% winter  10% summer.

Thanks Randy.
What would you recommend for venturie diameter? I have an OS NVA that I think will work. You are correct, it is a GP.

Phil Bare

I made true venturies for them and used 160 to 170 diameter, if your going to drill it for a restrictor venturie use a 265 to 275 diameter, this assumes a .157 diameter spray bar, if you using a new NVA  for a OS 20 then you would use a 230 to 250 size restrictor venturie.
Also if using a true ventrurie you will need an OLDER OS , Enya, PA, or ST NVA that is .157 diameter

Thanks Randy, I appreciate the info.
I had thought .270 to .280 would put me in the ball park.
I will start with .265 and see how it goes.
The NVA that I have is an older OS and is .157 in dia,
