Title: Magnum 36 which one ?
Post by: Ron Varnas on March 08, 2006, 11:28:05 PM
Read a bit on the Magnum 36's lately, the motor seems to be one of the best buys in the mid size engine range for Stunt.
Thing is which series Magnum do people refer to ???.......as I've come across,
Magnum 36 XL
Magnum 36 XL AII

Are all these the same or were there changes?

the 36 XL AII is the one to get. It has the squarish OS32 clone case.  The other one is the older, round cylinder design.  It's an ounce or so heavier but still runs well.

Phil C. is correct. Except that the model is XLS .36A. I have no idea what the "A" means (maybe they're Canadian?). But FWIW, the ASP .36 doesn't have any other model designators, and is the same thing, out the same door of the same factory. I think the picture link below will work, and may be of help.    ::)  Steve

Randy Smith sells the Magnum line and also makes the C/L Venturi's and a PA NVA. If this isn't timing I don't know what is, I just checked my mail and I just received the venturi, nva and a tongue muffler I ordered from Randy for my Mag XLS 36A. Looks great, Randy check will be in the mail Monday.

I haven't decided yet. I've got a bunch of projects to clear up before I start on a new one. From what I've been reading the Mag 36 will handle a 50oz plane so I was going to break it in first and then go from there. Randy also has headers for this engine which will take it from side to rear exhaust, this might play a role in what I put it in. At 79.99 there is definately room for another Mag 36 .

As to what the Magnum will fly, the choices are enormous!
Aaron put his first one in his 38 oz. Ares w/tongue muffler and a 10-4 Bolly 3 blade.  Keith Varley flies a Saturn (50 plus oz ??) on pipe, and Phil Granderson has used it in several including his Divas.

Wet 2 cycle run and is awesome.  Do not expect a "break" run, this is more like the old OS 40VF on pipe.  Plus it is much lighter.

I have several Aero Tiger 36 which give me more of a Classic 4-2 break, but the MAgnum is a very good engine.

Some one told me that the old Magnum 36 with the round cylinder, has a longer piston rod and there for would have more torque. Is that correct?
