Hi folks, was just thinking out aloud about a competitive combo for a smaller p.a model.

It looks like the kids have ordered me (god bless them) a Vector .40 kit for a combination Christmas/birthday present.

After seeing one that flew really well powered by an La .46 at the recent state champs, I'm thinking that a Magnum .36 could be the ultimate budget power package for all weather conditions.

I have read a fair bit about Phil Grandersons experiences with stock engines and was going to use this as a benchmark to start out with as I plan on keeping the engine stock bar a c/l venturi/nva and using extra head shims if absolutely necessary.
Possibly start out with about an 11x4 3 blade prop (ground clearance?),tube muffler and my standard 10/22 fuel mix. (50/50 castor synthetic)?

I would love to hear from those that are using Magnum .36's in regards to what fuel brews and off the shelf props work. I'm not really up to repitching and modifying props other than trimming the diameter down.

Ultimately I'd like to emulate a "pipe style" run as much as practically possible without the hassles of having to learn how to set a pipe up.

Rob: The Magnum 36xl is a great choice I have 3 of them and run them in diffrent ways Pipe, tongue muffler , and tube muffler all ran well. I use Bill Lee's 3 bld. 11x4 and run Power master 5 % and 10 % with
2 oz of Aero one. I was lucky to have Phil help me also. Good Luck .

i would recommend the LA 46 with a PA needle and a tongue muffler.

10/4 3 blade(Master AS, depitched) is more than enough prop for small plane like the Vector. Lets the motor loaf along like the big bore ones do.

I for got to mention that I have a ARC Vector with a P/A 40 Ultra lite on hedder muffler and it flys at 5.3 Laps on 65 ft lines with Bill Lee 11x4.5 3 blade prop, the P/A takes off in a 2cycle and about 1/2 to 3/4 's lapdrops to a 4cycle 5.3 laps.. Sweet flyer

Hi Rob:

I have a Magnum 36 in a Vector 40. I ran it two hours on the bench and it now has about another two hours of flight time. Using ST NVA with delrin venturi. The best NVA is from Randy Smith, he also sells the right size venturi for the Magnum. Prop is Thunder Tiger Cyclone 11x4.5, a prop Randy has said is a good choice for this engine and costs only $2. Plus, unlike APC props the TT will fit standard openings in most spinners. Fuel is Sig 10-10-10. Using stock muffler, which is reasonably small and was needed anyway to balance the model. Run in a wet 2-cycle at about 10K at launch I get a very nice pipe-like run. Larry Wong knows as much as anybody apart from Phil Granderson about the Magnum and I would listen to his advice as well. He can advise on carbon 3-blades, around 11x4 narrow blade. I have no ground clearance problem with the 11 inch props, but that is off a paved circle. If you fly grass I would skip the wheel pants and run larger wheels and after-market axles. I like the model a LOT as does Larry. The Magnum is a very compact motor and fits in the cowl nicely.

Having said all that an LA46 would also be an excellent choice, great stunt run right out of the box. CL version is $69 from Tower. Dave Shirley Jr flew an LA46 Vector into Advanced around here two seasons ago and can advise as to that combo. I love the ease of operation of the LA46 in my Imitation.

Sounds like you have good kids. Or they want something from you.

Bradley, I have thought about an La .46 as I am pretty impressed with the one I have but I have been intending to "play" with a Magnum .36 for a while and thought that the Vector could be an ideal test bed for it.

The girls are pretty good, they respond fairly well to prompting (bribery!) though this could come back to haunt me around Christmas time.

Dondi Garrison won an Age Group (Junior, IIRC) at the NATS with a Vector and the Magnum.

Hey gang,

Randy Smith is the OBVIOUS guy to talk to about this combo! I'm running two TT .36's on pipes, two Aero Tigers on chip mufflers, and one stocker on a "combat like' fun ship. All great engines. BUT, Randy tells me the the T.T. is the engine of choice over the Magnum at the moment!

Suggest you pick up the phone and listen to him!

The Magnum XLS .36 can work extremely well. I get to see PTG's once a year, usually. The best I've seen in a muffled setup was Monty Summach's. Monty is from Saskatoon, Saskatchawan, Canada. He said it was stock, but he did make his own tube muffler. I've also seen some guys really having fits with them and have AMAZING displays of RUNNAWAY.

The OS .46LA is much more cooperative, that's for certain, if you just give up on the plastic backplate and RNV straight away. Almost like falling off a log. OBTW, the OS .40/.46LA mufflers bolt up to the Magnum, and might be an interesting experiment, if you've been following the much dreaded .21 FP/BBTU saga. Or need nose weight.

Right you are BUT , the Magnum that Dondi ran was not the same ones made now, It was a Thunder Tiger magnum made in Taiwan, and was identical to the Thunder Tiger 36 and not to the Magnums that have been made in China for the Past several years

It appears that it's the BLUE versions that are discontinued. The NATURAL version is still available.

I could not find either in the stunt version, only in R/C. Im guessing the R/C version will be gone soon. Good old O.S. will probably be comming out with something new soon.

Bill,

Didn't Dondi win with a regular Vector, not Vector .40? Original Vector is larger and was designed for A OS 40FP.

P.S. Rick Campbell built regular Vector and powered it with a PA40Lite on a pipe. What a monster combo! Randy hit one out of the park with that engine and design!

Nope Dondi won several NATs Championships with A VECTOR 40, matter of fact so did Rob Gruber
The Original Vector is a larger plane and was designed for a ST 46 or 51. It does fit very well with a PA 40 UL Merlin
