Need Super Tigre guru's
« on: November 20, 2009, 07:28:31 PM »
I just got a 1977 Super Tigre 46, chrome sleeve, muffler lug, one ring engine. I pulled the back plate to have a look inside, and noticed it has the full circle crank, with and alumimum band around it. I remember when I was flying R/C pattern, back in the 70's, that some of the 60's that were set up this way, sometimes had the crank ring come loose and do bad things to the engine. Does the 46 have this problem? If so, do you just cut the ring off? The engine seems to be in very good condition otherwise, tight brgs., and great compression. Also, what props do you guys run on these? Thanks for any and all replys. Oh! One other question. Is there any tricks to pulling the wrist pin out of the hole in the back of the case? Seems like I read about this before, but do not remember.

Hi Jim

It is a good bet that you do not have a chromed sleeve motor, even though many STs said chrome on them
The ring pressed onto the crankshaft is a problem and needs to be removed.
There is no trick to pulling the pin as long as the motor has not been run a lot, or ran hot and the pin is not
stuck or has a ridge burned onto the wrist pin

The Bolly 11.5 x 6.5 3 blade as GREAT for this motor
many people used the REV UP 11 x 5W
The BYO 12 x 5 cut to 11.5 works well  , the REVUP 12x 5 works as does the 12 x 6 REV up

You need to have more info on what plane it is going to pull

Thanks Randy; This one does not say it is chrome, but looking up from the back it looks like chrome. May just be highly polished steel. It is also possible that it is not a 77 motor, but that is what the paper work in the box said. May not be the right box. I will know more when I get it appart. I will remove the aluminum band. That is what I remember the R/C guys doing after a couple of them sort of blew up.

Looks like props in the 11-5 to 12-6 should be OK then. I have no idea what I will use it in yet or if at all. I just got this along with some others from a friend I use to fly with 30 years ago. When your friends call and tell you they have a Saito 90 twin, they want to give you, along with some other engines, you just go pick them up. I use to think I was not a collector, but my engine room says otherwise. LL~ Thanks again for the info.

Definitely remove the band!!!!!   Jim if you need them, I probably have a couple of Rev-Up 11 X5 props in the junk barrel  that I could let you have.

Hey, thanks Marvin. Hang on to them and bring them to the next contest. Or maybe we will get to Wichita one of these days between doctor and dental appointments. LL~

That's what I ended up with at the end of the ST46 era, at least in the heat of summer. At reasonable temperatures here at sea level, a highly reworked Rev-up 12-6 (changed to 5.8 progressing to 6.3 at the tips) was marginally better. But as it got hotter it needed more pitch.
