Title: L&J - What is done
Post by: BillLee on March 02, 2013, 05:29:50 AM
I have in my possession an L&J Fox. I have disassembled it and cleaned it and put it back together. A sweet engine! I think I can see the mods that he does but was wondering if I've seen all:

Hemi head with angled plug
Stuffer BP
ABC P/L
Partially blocked bypass.

Is it the stock crank with the small machining on the counter weight, or is it an after-market crank?

Anything I missed?

I hope this engine finds a better home than the ARF Nobler I found it in, but that's where it's going back to. An engine of this apparent quality deserves a nice stunter to call home.

Bill, since Larry does not post here I'll take a shot at it. I suspect it is a stock crank that has been balanced and lightened. That is what is done with L&J LA-46's.  8)

Hi Bill,

Larry sent me a sheet several years ago with everything he does to his reworks.  As to what you mention, it is correct.  I don't remember him adding an ABC P/S but I guess you could have him add it with a price.  The crank he machines and adds "heavy" metal to balance it.  Otherwise he pretty much just "Blue Prints" the engine, including polishing the throat of the venturi.

The one he did for me, and the one I did with his instructions, are very smooth running for a Fox .35.  I believe more power is delivered to the prop since it is not doing as much "shaking".  He recommends 15% nitro for fuel.

Bill, thanks for the response. It definitely is an ABC set up. It cleaned up nicely, like I do with my F2C engines after some running, to get all the baked on carbon and varnish off. Sure was a slick motor when I put it back together.

Hi Bill-
I  will bring you Larry's Fox 35 tuning instruction sheeet Wednesday. It is old and doesn't mention a lot of stuff that was done to the engine you have. Some of that could have been done by the owner. Guess the best bet would be to talk to Larry if he shows up at VSC.

Thanks, Don. Good suggestion.

That engine in the blue ARF Nobler will be one of the models for sale at the club meeting Wednesday. Somebody will be getting a real nice set-up. If nobody buys it, I will be taking it to VSC along with whatever else is left.
