I'm interested in hearing how everyone is running their Brian Gardner ABC LA46. Prop, venturi, plug, rpm, NVA's, what head shim, fuel.
I've been bench running mine. I had a Merlin 2005 plug in it but when I pull the glow igniter off it loses close to 600rpm, tried 2 different new Merlins with same results. Tried a OS A3 and it doesn't lose nearly as much just a little.
Anyway hoping to eliminate some trial and error here.
Thanks

tight ABC SETUPS WILL DO THAT AS THEY ARE braking in, the ST 46s I have setup with his P/S do that at first
You should be breaking in on the bench or holding the plane, then just turn the needle in aboutr 1/4 turn
you can also use the 2004 Merlin it is the hottest, but a drop in RPMs on breakin hurts nothing as YOU control the needle

I have a new Enya BB that I am breaking in. It was so bad that when I removed the glow starter the engine quit.
So, I left the igniter on the plug for the first few runs.
After several runs like that, I could remove the glow igniter.
Now it runs fine.
Randy is right.

Just out of curiosity why does the tight fit cause the Merlin to do this?

Chris,
How many head shims are you running? I haven't run mine yet, but am debating on one shim or two. Compression feels too high with just one.

I think you should go back and fix how you wrote this line, change "ruining" to "running"", if that is what you meant. Although there are some out there that just may be ruining a good P/L set! Brian sent instructions with the parts, so just follow those to the letter. Tons of other information on the list here on how to break in engines of all kinds, especially ABC type engines.
Type at you later,

Curenttly I just got it put together on Sunday and for now I'm just using the stock. 015 head shim, the one that comes with the ABC sets are thinner. I guess it's a toss up whether to use both or just the stock one or just the one that comes with it. I was hoping to get some feedback on this post but no luck so far.

It;s not the plug doing it, and on breakin, you only need to turn the needle in, lean out a little and all is fine, after the piston is seated and run in, the engine should act normal. But in general applications with Glow Plugs, if the RPM is dropping when you remove the battery, you have either a bad or weak plug, or a very hot battery. If the plug does that new it is too cold for the motor.
The Merlin 2004 is one of the hottest plugs you can get and is excellent for Stunt engines, I have sold north of 500 of them

I have setup several of them, and I put in 1 stock gasket and 1 of the gaskets Briam supplies, high comp engine and it runs very well that way

Chris I sent ya a P/M..

Remember fellas these are stunt timed etc, so they run the way we want and will be flexible. You can now try things that didn't work with the stock setup like bigger venturies for more grunt - and more nitro :-)
