Enya 61 CXL Side Exhaust

I have been watching this section for some time on info concerning the Enya 61 CXL side exhaust. If anyone has any info, I would appreciate it. Important, side exahust without any pipe-just muffler.

I have used the ABN version which pretty much the same engine and have several friends using the Ring One.  This is a very friendly engine, works with just about any prop and venturi size. I know of people using props from a Rev-Up 12x5 to a 13x4 3 blade carbon fibre prop.  With an 8.5mm venturi and  13x4 3 blade carbon prop it will produce an enormous amount of power, as seen in in this video:




The engine in this video is the ABC but I see no reason why the ring version will not run the same, if not stronger, as it has a bit bigger piston.

After I made this video I got an even better engine run using the original muffler and muffler pressure.

Just to clarify there are 3 different engine models:

Enya 61CX      ABN  side exhaust
Enya 61CXR    ABN with ring piston Side Exhaust
Enya 61CXLR   ABN with ring piston Rear Exhaust

Hi Martin,

Watching the video the Enya produced one of the better 2-4 engine runs I have seen in a 60 size engine, especially during inside manuevers. The timing of the "four" break on the outsides seemed different, maybe fractionally delayed than on the insides. My perception may be skewed by watching on video. Stregas tend to be hefty birds but the Enya seemed to pull it effortlessly. Impressive setup.

Why side exhaust? Nothing says a rear exhaust has to use a tuned pipe. Randy can sell you a header and muffler for most RE stunt engines.  H^^ Steve

Does in fact Enya even make a rear exhaust muffler for the 61 CXLRS engine?

The Enya site simply says 'muffler optional,' and that won't cut it at any field that I know of!

My understanding is that a factory RE muffler was/is available which is more than I can say about the engine which has been "sold out" for quite a while now with no return date in sight. Yup, I asked.  8)

Yes, factory has muffler for the 61RE.  It's a 2 piece unit.  I got mine from Randy.

Enya may or may not have the RE muffler in stock, they didn't when I got my RE from Randy so I also got his adaptor and slide on muffler. Assuming the timings are the same for the SE and RE (and I see no reason why they might be different) then both should act similarly when muffled. Interestingly it appears they're not actually an ABN as such because the Enya leaflet describes what's more like a Nickasil liner.

With my setup (SV-11) I'm using a 120cc (4 ounce) Uniflowed clunk tank with no muffler pressure, 13x5 Bolly CF 2 blade and 7900 ground revs with no noticeable increase in flight which gives a continuous 4 stroke (my preferred way) for the entire 6 minute flight at 5.3 seconds/lap with 70 foot lines (centre to centre). I'm still using up the 4 litres of running in fuel which is 75/25 all castor but when that's gone I'll do a switch to my usual 80/20 all castor. The plug I'm using is a long reach Taipan red which needs an extra washer to keep it flush with the combustion chamber because Enya make their heads to suit their medium length plugs.

Shame you didn't see the Plank Racing at Cowra this year.  Mufflers weren't optional, they were banned!  >:D

(Come to think of it, a monster Plank with an Enya 61 would be just the ticket...)

Because side exahust motors have proven to be staggeringly superior.  LL~

Hi Chris
The muffler optional means that it is not free, or it does not come  with the motor, you have to buy the RE header and muffler if you want the Enya RE muffler

Yep. One bloke had a Taipan goldhead with the rear muffler, and was made to take it off before he flew.  Gotta love Oily Hand weekend...

Back to your basic question:

my experience with the ringed version (side exhaust on muffler of course) was not very positive in direct comparison with the ABN version. The ringed version is not as strong (at least the motor I have), produces more heat, the ring looses compression when slowly turning by hand and the running characteristics don't allow this clean and strong four-cycle that the ABN version had.

With sufficient testing you will find for sure a prop and venturi size that suits the motor well and that would lead you to the expected results. I can only say that I haven't found it or at least the equipment that worked well on the ABN didn't work as well on the ringed engine.

I have also tested the high compression head insert. It improved a bit the power and the switching ability from 4 to 2 cycle. On my ABN I also run the high compression head.

The engine is probably worth to do some more tests. I simply didn't want to invest that much time.

Hi Christoph,

I have the RE version with ring, but I have not tested without a pipe to say anything. On the Bench it seems it ran as strong as the ABN.

As matter of fact I got 2 ABN Enya 61CX that run differently. The most used one I have, my Engine #1, is quite a bit stronger and exactly as you describe it has a deeper and stronger 4 stroking then my other ABN engine, my Engine #2. I believe it is because of production tolerances and the difference could be how the liner fits into the crank case. I have observed that some engines that when the piston is at the bottom it is not flush with the exhaust port, it goes a bit further down. Perhaps adjusting the crank case so the liner will sit in deeper it may improve performance.  With the stronger engine I used low compression head and Enya 4 an 5 plug, with the Enya 3 plug I get pre ignition. To get close to the same power of my engine #1 I installed the high compression head in the Engine # 2, with Enya 3 plug no signs of pre ignition. Turning the prop slowly Engine #1 has less compression then #2. I hardly used my Engine # 2, perhaps it is not fully broken in.

Perhaps a new ring from Frank Bowman will make your engine as strong as the ABN one.
