Jaguar powered with a Gardner LA46 p&l kit
« on: December 28, 2017, 08:32:44 PM »
This is a 54 span Jaguar that I just started to set up and trim. The engine is a LA 46, Gardner P&L, head kit, APC 12.25x3.75 prop, stock .283 Venturi, and a .156 spray bar. Nice 4 stroke power, no problem with the 15mph winds, but the sun was just left of the big tree which made the plane disappear into the shadow of the tree. The video was taken with a IPhone on a tripod.

I have some questions, what fuel, glow plug tach setting, how much break-in, and anything else you can share about it, but it sounds good.

Hi all!!!

Nice to be on the list for two sets in the next batch.

I´m interested in knowing if posible the size and weight of the ship.

Certainly Brian Gardner suplies top class material, I have several and have absolutely at least the same quality of Stalker, Discovery Retro....

Happy New Year to all.

Manuel.

You guys should find that it's very flexible and user friendly and will work with a much wider variety of props etc than stock.

I’m using Powermaster GMA 10-22 fuel, and a Thunderbolt R.C. plug. The LA 46 was used before I installed the Gardner kit. No special modifications are needed, just remove the old piston, liner, and head and install the Gardner parts with the gasket that he supplied. I ran two tanks of fuel on the ground (5 oz tank on uniflow) to make sure the engine ran well and to get a base line needle setting. My engine ran so well that no break-in was needed, I just sent it up on the rich side for the first flight. The muffler is a OS that I cut off the outlet and JB welded on a larger outlet with a .430 ID, and add extra pipe to keep the exhaust off the model. I installed one piece of pantyhose over the Venturi held on with a oring on my stunt engines, it seems to even out the run. I did not tach the engine yet, I only have about 8 flights on it and I’m still in the tuning mode. The Jaguar weighs 51 oz and has a wing span of 54 inches. Let me know if you have any more questions, I’m happy to share my set up.
Happy New Year
Al

"Jaguar" is a Steve Buso design, right? We don't see too many Buso designs out here...too bad, I think. Your engine sounds good!  D>K Steve

  Hi Al;
The engine sounds great. Have you tried any flights without all the extensions on the muffler? I find that they restrict the exhaust too much and affect performance. If some one asks me about these things, I suggest they make them as large as possible and as short as possible, if they really must use them. Paper towels aren't that expensive! Try a few flights without it and see what happens. You may be surprised!
Type at you later and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Al, If my FP .40 comes out like that I'm gonna be one happy camper, Actually I have no doubt it will, my Max35 came out great like a brand new 40 year old engine but better  :)

Congrats on your new Jaguar. Your engine run sounds great also. Love the growl. Buso's designs are a work of art and so are his plans. I have a Jag under construction that is next on my list to finish. Mine will have a Merlin .40 Ultralight for power.

Steve was a great guy, it's a shame he doesn't fly anymore. He used the "surf flourescents" of the time very effectively.  I say that despite the fact he beat me out for Rookie of the Year in 1993 on appearance points (quite deservedly, Buso masterpiece VS pretty good but boring Monokote). That's when I realized that there's not point worrying about what other people do, I made WAY more than 5 points of correctible errors and lack of finishing work that would have made up the difference. I was not remotely prepared for the marathon aspect of the NATs and had pretty much burned myself out even before the contest started in earnest.
