I got this LA .46 off of the RC site. The engine looks brand new. I pulled the back off just to take a peak and this is what I see. I was planning on putting this on my new Vector but now I am thinking that might not be such a good idea.

Well I just looked at the photo and for some reason the edge looks all jagged and it made me run back up stairs to look at the counter weight again. It run in oil that is pooled on the edge. The counter weight is not damaged. It looks correct just has all that rust on it. Will it come off as the engine breaks in or should I pull the crank? The engine turns over very smooth and I do not feel any grinding. It looks like it has very little time on it. Compression is great!

The engine was put away after running with fuel still in it (not run dry), and no after run oil added, so that is what happens to the crank counter weight, (rust). I would pull the crank and clean off the rust, cause some of it will get run through the engine. Running engines dry and adding after run oil will prevent this from happening. Some guys think if the engine is not a ball bearing engine they don't need to do this cause there are no bearings to rust. But you are looking at what happens to the crank counter weight from such treatment. After a clean up this engine could be fine if it wasn't abused in any other way. Good luck to you. :)

Rust is pretty abrasive stuff -- I'd take this advise if it were me.

If you do not clean out the rust it will do a lot of grinding in there. R/C engines are bad about internal rust because they often are not run dry, much less have after run oil applied. Methanol is highly hygroscopic, that is it absorbs water, actualy it misces with water, the water causes rust inside the engine. It ruins a lot of ball bearings, but any rust that comes loose inside the engine is a very agressive abraisive.

Take it apart and clean all of the corrosion off , then wash everything, oil it and put ot back together

Thanks guys. Took it apart and cleaned it up. Replaced the head screws with cap screws. Just ran 2oz thru it. ;-)

Ran fine. Started @ 10300 rpm dialed it down to 9600 rpm.
