Hi guys,
Is this engine another piece of junk or is it a fun time engine??? Sure does look pretty, looks a lot like a OS Engine but has a very nice baked coating, powder coated?? I wonder if the timing is the same as the os fsr?? Might be another engine to run on the peace pipe?? I checked on search and found some articles about the Irvine but not sure if they where speaking about the MK 3 model?? The rear of the case looks more like a merco engine??? The best I've found is the Brett Version Ro Jett 61. Darn, had to go back to work and I believe they're trying to kill a old man, working me six days a week so I haven't been playing with my toys. You retired guys really have it made, just play play play!!!!! I purchased a real nice California Lark Kit from Lee and I believe the OS 46 VF is going to live in that plane. I've been using the OS 40 FSR Engine in a profile plane and that also is a very nice engine to play with. Hey!! if ya got any news about the Irvine I would appreciate hearing from ya???

Generally speaking about Irvines and I have quite a few of them. They are probably the finest engines that great Britan ever produced,my opinion, and for R/C they were durable, reliable, powerful, reasonably priced engines. Irvine when they made the mark 3 engines made a 25 and 36 engine specifically for C/L. I'd like to say that they were successful but they were not. Reworking was necessary to achieve anything approching the kind of run necessary for C/L stunt. They are also large cases and heavy for our purposes.
Still they are really great engines to run and enjoy.

Hi Dennis,
I appreciate your input. Sounds to me this engine is a boat anchor and needs to set on a desk for looks. I'll find a place on the fireplace so I'll have something nice to look at. To bad, causes shes a nice looking baby.

I have a couple of engines, a Fox 1.2 twin and a Johnson 35 that are Fireplace mantel ornaments. The Johnson might run someday, but the Fox will probably remain a conversation piece.

Whoa there, before you put Betsy out to pasture please consider its strong point - they are very solidly made.

Put that solidity to use and whack a diesel head on it and if you have any doubts as to why then ask that question here - http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/forumid_87/tt.htm

You will get a 'fun' engine out of it that spins a larger prop at lower revs and the greater mass works in your favor since diesels love to heat sink their blocks.

And before others chime in with 'waste of time,' 'the stink ain't worth it,' ask them if they have actually done a conversion or simply just talked about it.

 They make wonderful diesels indeed.

Hi guys,
The engine weighs 12.3 ounces. Heavy but not that bad, I wonder if anyone has tried to use a pipe with this baby?? She's ABC construction and seems to be build very well. I'm not sure of the timing, seems to have nice bearings. I wonder if a OS header would fit on her?? You know I have to but her on the test stand and if the OS header fits, look out cause we're going to give she a spin. Instructions states max rpm's 20,000, so if I run her around 11,000 shouldn't hurt her??? I know ya want to stay away from heavy engines but most of my planes I end up adding weight to the nose. Maybe another ounce won't hurt a thing??? If she develops enough power might just be fun to test her against my OS pipe engines?? I believe most pipe engines run different on a test stand, they seem to run better once they're in the air?? Sounds like they unload?? Maybe bye the weekend I'll be able to give her a try?? Its the pits working six days a week??

Hi guys,

Most interesting the OS 46 SF Header fits perfect on the Irvine 46??? Saturday is just around the corner and if I don't have to work late. I'll find out how she does on a tuned pipe system?? I received the California Lark Kit from Lee today and she's a beauty, Mr. OS 46 VF is going to live in her. At the moment I'm back to flying My Mess, which is a scratch build, the OS 40 FSR on Tuned Pipe lives in her and man is the FSR a sweet running baby. I can't wait to finish the Legacy cause the Mr. Brett Buck Ro Jett 61 will live in her. The Irvine looks like a very well build engine, so I have high hopes but if it don't work, it'll look nice sitting on my desk??? Timing could be way off??????

What is the "California Lark" kit? The Southwick Lark, the Mackey Lark, or something else? Who made the kit? Maybe I'm easy to confuse, but I yam!  H^^ Steve

Hi Steve,
Its a Lark Kit developed bye Smith's Model Products in San Dimas, CA. Designed by Ed Southwick, wing span 57.5, length 42, wing area 620 sq. in., engine ST 46 or equal. Features, machine cut wood parts, polished aluminum landing gear, clear plastic canopy, competition control components with 4" bell crank, wing tip weight box, tail weight box, adjust able leadout guide, fiber glass pushrod, complete hardware package, full size plan (29sq. ft.). That's what it says on the box???? Don't have a clue how old the kit is??? Looks like who ever made the kit did a great job on all of the parts and man there is a million parts. I'm sure I'll have to increase the bottom to hide the tuned pipe, sure a nice looking kit. Purchased her from Lee and I believe she will be a winner.

Ah. That there is a Classic Legal design. Bruce Hunt has won lots of 1st place and 3rd place trophies with his, using a .46LA. The 1st places were in Classic, & the 3rd places were in Expert, behind Paul and Howard. IMO, it would be a shame to hang a pipe on it, 'cause it would draw some wrath in Classic.  y1 Steve

There were very few of these kits produced. They were a labor of love by Kenn Smith who was also the proprietor of Smith's Tanks. Time would be the early 90's. He had Ed's blessing on the project. Steve's right, this plane deserves to be built as a true classic as in without a pipe. Phil Granderson campaigned one (although probably not from the kit) a few years ago, it flew great and looked very cool.  8)

Hi guys,

First thing, Mr. Phil could make anything look cool. Second thing, Mr. Smith must have had a love for our toys, cause he did a great job making all the parts for this kit. He bagged and tagged the different parts per area, great set of plans. Third thing, how old is the OS 46 VF and the OS 40 FSR?? Fourth thing, I don't really care about classic, I just like the different designs. I loved my Stiletto and ran electric in her?? One of the main things is that ya have to have a power source ya like and works for ya. I also have a great ST 46 and will probably set her up so I can run different power units. I appreciate your input and thanks for letting me know when the kit was developed.
