« on: October 06, 2007, 08:55:35 PM »
Hi ,

What can I use for gasket material for a rear cover plate gasket ?
I was thinking some Garlock 1/64" paper , but I'm hoping for better suggestions .

Thanks

Use a piece pf brown paper bag.

Remove the rear cover and carefully scrape off the old gasket from both surfaces. Then oil the back of the crankcase and press it against the brown paper. cut the new gasket and oil the orher side after test-fitting. Replace the Rear Cover and you're done.

Quick, easy, free (well, almost).

I went to my local automotive store and bought a sheet of gasket material. They had in different thicknesses so I picked one around .015 thick.

One thing I have used is a piece of Aluminum Duct tape (the type used to seal airconditioning/heating duct work.
Cut off a piece, peel off the liner, and stick it to the crankcase. Rub it on. Then take a sharp xacto blade and cut our the screw holes, then the inside. Now put on the backplate and screw it down. Now slice off the part remaining on the outside. Seems to work for me. Also will work for the muffler seal. The aluminum in the tape is pretty soft.

Lately I've been using Permatex RTV for most of the sealing duties on my engines.  The only precaution is with some engines the backplate can rub the connecting rod if it sits too deeply in the case without a thick production gasket.  Sometimes I'll sticky up the compressed OEM gasket and put it all back together.  It also works pretty well to seal the venturi insert to the case, etc.  I had a Hayes clunk tank that suffered a rupture from the clunk flying forward in a sudden stop.  I cleaned the broken area and applied a glob of RTV, worked great.  I've got a roll of gasket material from the autoparts store rolling around somewhere but most of the time it didn't really work very well.  The RTV conforms better.  Even a small tube will last a long time.

GMA used playing cards, I keep an old deck around and they work great.
