Title: ID Engine

I was given this engine a long time ago when I was in High School....  I ran it in a couple of Voodoos...  I am not sure what it is?  Says Fox 35.. it has the canted glow plug head like a 36x .. also 4 bolt backplate...  .35 combat?  ...   any ideas?

I'm not totally sure but it looks like the Rocket .35 which originally came with a red head that somebody put a 36X head on.  Maybe someone else knows better.

You're much better off using http://sceptreflight.com/Model%20Engine%20Tests/Index.html rather than the .net site because I haven't been able to update that site for about 6 months to do updates. So far there's been about 50+ tests added in the last 6 months so to help finding these for anyone just switching over I've added a link to them on the main page.

It does not have the lugs on the front of the crankcase... I guess that rules out 1962...   some small differences...  bottom web does not go all the way to the end of case... top web looks like the drawing...  also it does have the removeable venturi insert....

It does have the hole in the back of the case... ...  On the combat special pages .. it looks like that would make it a 61... don't know if that applies to rockets too?  The head does look like a 36x head with canted plug... 

thanks for the help and links... I have learned something!!  It used to run well... haven't tried it out for about 45 yrs   :P 

I think I need to clean it up, run it and put it on something

(I went with the FOX ROCKET 35 and 40 test because it mentions the centrally divided exhaust port whereas the FOX Rocket 35 doesn't.)

The engine in the rocket 35 and fox 40 article has the lugs on the front... My engine does not have these...also mine does have the different spacing on the backplate screws... bottom spacing is about 15/16... top is about 1".   I read about this in one of the articles too... good reading  :-)

If the venturi restrictor is removable, it's a Combat. IIRC, the first year of the Fox .35 Combat didn't have a painted head, the next year had black painted head, about '58 or '59. Fox moved the glowplug around and tilted it on occasion, for no real reason. Perhaps marketing. Or, maybe it's been changed out?   

Since it doesn't have the "Rocket" logo, I wouldn't think it'd be a "Rocket .35", but the identifiers are the cast-in venturi restrictor, the Rocket logo, the red painted head, and IIRC, the crank counterbalance is minimal. D>K Steve

Per Bill Ives, "A SHORT HISTORY OF THE FOX COMBAT SPECIALS AND OTHER CLOSELY RELATED ENGINES":
It all began in 1957 when Duke Fox introduced the new Fox .35 Combat Special. It had the new crankcase with four screw rear cover, round intake with removable insert, new spade type NVA, plain aluminum head, bushing main bearings, with hole rear of crankcase for wristpin removal. "Fox .35" on the bypass.

My vote. Early CS with a 36x head. Have to see all the parts for sure id. It should fit the stunt 35 bolt pattern. By all means, run it!  PS   the angled plug made it easier to change on the later combat planes like the Voodoo.
