OS LA .40
« on: December 02, 2017, 07:02:22 PM »
I have a couple of OS LA .40 engines NIB. What is the best set up for these engines. I know the LA .46 is the engine of choice, but have these so am wondering what works for all of you. Fuel, Props, Tank set up, and plug. Thanks in advance. Gerald Schamp

Do a search on this section of the forum for LA.40. You will find that it is pretty similar, except for prop diameter. They don't have the good rep that the LA.46 has fro some reason. I have an LA.40 in my Dusty profile scale/stunt model, and have never had an unacceptable run with it. I have it on throttle for scale competition, and then for stunt contests, I pull the carb and install a venturi and spray bar and fly as normal. Plenty of power for the almost 50 ounce airplane. I think I have a .250 venturi from Russ Gifford in it and a three bladed 10-5 prop from Master Airscrew, SIG 10% Champion fuel, Glowdevil R/C long plug and tung muffler. I'll probably use another one in any future .40 size stunt projects.
  Type at you later,

I'll second what Dan said. In my nobler, my os 40 la seemed to like 10 or 10.5 inch props. Everything else I just copied from the "list your os 46 la set up" thread.

I have 4 of the LA40 and they like the APC 11-4 on a typical 540-550 inch model, 10-10-10 Sig (or your choice) fuel. I have an Enya NVA in one. 2 others use stock venturi and OS venturi mounted NVA. 1 has rear-mounted NVA, seems to work fine. Motor doesn't seem to care what muffler is used, I have used stock muffer, tongue mufflers, and Randy Smith tube muffler. Don't try to run it like a 1950s engine. They like around 10,500 or so.

Only one I've been around was Pete Ferguson's, on an ARF Cardinal profile. We messed with it a bit and ended up with a Randy Aero CNC Tube muffler and one of the TT 11 x 4.5 props. The muffler was mostly just to get the CG closer than the stock muffler. Now's the time to lean on ZZ Prop to get those CF repli-props on the market!  y1 Steve

I have several of the LA 40's and it seems that 11-4 or 11-5 works best depending on the airplane and weather.  I also learned, do not touch the needle on the first flight as by the time I get ready for second flight the setting was correct to begin with.   So a good warm up on the ground is done before flight now.   The 46's just seem to start and fly hardly ever touching the needle.   By the way my prop of choice on the 40's Top Flite Power points.

Gerald, you might want to review the article on the Flying Lines web site regarding the late Don McClave's tune-up for the OS .40.  The article is posted at:   http://www.flyinglines.org/McClave.LA40.html
