LA 46 Disassembly
« on: March 15, 2014, 12:00:22 PM »
Well used LA-46  Having trouble getting the connecting rod off the crank pin.   >:(  It appears that the opposite end is not sliding along on the wrist pin.  I can see that that a small portion of the wrist pin & Teflon pad slides out of the piston & into the port channel.  The  old push off with an Allen wrench has not worked. Do I need to:

Use heat?

Soak in carburetor  solvent?

Perform a very secret, highly technical, mechanical maneuver?  AKA send it to Randy.

Thank you.

John I tear down a few engines and have these issues.  I usually soak in laquer thinner overnight then try the Allen wrench.  If that fails point a heat gun through the backplate right down in there and get it pretty warm.  Go back to the Allen wrench.  Eventually it will move enough.

hold the case by the lugs with a vise grip pliers, you can use cloth plastic tape etc, over the jaws to prevent marring, use an allen wrench with plastic electrical tape over the short end, heat up the piston on top and underneath with a heat gun, slide the allen wrench behind the rod at the top, pull the rod over, then slide the wrench to the bottom and pull it off of the crank pin,

It is apart, without any damage.  The solvent may have helped but it was heat that finally broke it loose.

Thank You for your help!
