Aero Tiger Fuel Consumption
« on: October 10, 2021, 03:44:53 PM »
I have an Aero Tiger 36 in my Nobler. It has a tank that will hold 4 1/4 ounces of fuel. When I complete the square eight it starts to burp and warn me
low on fuel. Using fuel with 5% nitro and 22% oil, launching at 10,200 RPM with a BY&O  11-4 prop and a tube muffler.. The motor has roughly 2 hours total run time. Will my mileage improve with more run time?

Not that much!  If it runs otherwise OK, just make a bigger tank. A Green Box Nobler, built to plans, has a narrow but deep tank compartment, and you can get in almost arbitrarily large tanks.

I was going to suggest 6 ounces minimum if 4 1/4 only gets you half way r so. Maybe even try the panty hose on the venturi trick for a little more mileage if needed. Or a venturi that is .005" smaller or so, maybe .010"??

Agreed. If it runs well, let it use as much fuel as needed. I think I was using 4 3/4 oz fuel on my nobler with a 36. I think I had a 6oz tank in,  like Dan suggested. Then I could add more as needed when traveling

Are you running the richest 4 stroke that anybody ever ran? I can do the pattern and then some on 4 oz with an LA46.

Different breed of cat entirely, but projecting out, we are talking something like 5.5 ounces, which sounds like an awful lot of 5% fuel, even if it is still tight.

I was using 6.5 ounces of 15% fuel in my ST46, the next weekend I was running 3.75 ounces in a 40VF in the same airplane, with drastically superior performance.

If you read my post I said I am running my AT 36 at 10,200 RPM with a 11-4 prop. That is absolutely not in a rich 4 stroke mode.

My OS 25la takes the same amount of fuel my os46la takes to run a pattern, in nice flying airplanes

Reread Randy Smith's instructions that came with my AT-36. It says "it has very hard chrome liner and needs 2 hours for initial break-in".
"It will continue to break-in for the next 15 or so hours"

So my thought is that the fuel economy will continue to improve over time as I have only 2 hours of run time on my motor.
Will give it time before I decide on a bigger tank.

Agreeing with Motorman, I'm also puzzled by the high consumption.   ???  ???

After a thorough run in (around an hour and a half), my Aero Tiger,  mounted on the prototype Brodak P-40 profile, required just a tad over 4 ounces for the pattern. After the clover leaf, I could fly an additional 5 to 6 laps.
I was using Brodak 10/23, 50-50 fuel, a plastic clunk tank, a 10 1/2 - 4 wood prop and 60 foot eye to eye lines.

What's different about it to make it drink so much fuel? I'm doing the pattern with 4oz of 10% with a bigger engine and he's making it half way through with 5%. Is it the boost port? I'm guessing less blow down time and taller transfer ports blowing raw fuel out the exhaust or is it just the higher rpm? I'm curious because I fly enduro.

It definitely sounds odd, and I don't know what the problem might be. I have seen a few cases like this over the years, including one particular 40VF, set up the way we normally did it, and normally running around 4.75-5 ounces of fuel, that took over 7 ounces, while apparently running just like all the others. We never figured out what it was.

But, from a simplistic standpoint, if it runs good the way it is, I think you should leave it alone and build a bigger fuel tank.

To me it sounds like your engine is working too hard and the problem is the prop if your fuel is good. Try a APC 11.5x4 prop and see if your mileage improves. Your lap times should be between 4.9-5.1. using 60' lines. Other thing that effect run time are the size of exhaust outlet and venturi. Give us the rest of your engine, model set up to help pinpoint your problem.

Most people use  4 to 4.5  ounces  with an Aero Tiger
Maybe check to see  if it has been altered, like  venturi opened up

I bought the motor new in the box from a friend. It had never been run so unlikely any modifications to it.
Measured the venturi and I got .175" ID. Motor starts and runs well using 5% nitro. Using a BY&O 11/4 prop
will try some different props before I go to a bigger tank. The uniflow tank I am using holds 4 1/4 ounces.

Improved the fuel consumption on my Aero Tiger 36 by switching from a tube muffler to a tonque muffler. Now I am getting 7 1/2 minutes on 4 1/4 oz of fuel.
Using 5% nitro and a APC 11-4 prop on 63' lines on a 41 oz Nobler. Motor has plenty of power and runs well.

Cool! And it will probably get better as time goes on. Keep tracking the fuel consumption and see if the mileage gets better on the tongue muffler. If you see a significant improvement over the next flying season, try the tube muffler again now that you know what to expect..

Now your in the ball park. Try the tube muffler again to check the consumption against the tongue muffler.

Flew my Nobler today still using the tongue muffler. Did complete patterns and the motor ran for
six or seven laps after the four leaf clover on 4 1/4 oz of fuel. Problem solved!

Bill,
What rpm and lap times are you flying at? Also, what line diameter, at 41 oz. a good set of 0.012" will work.

Best,    DennisT

I am flying at 9,400 RPM with a 11X4.5 prop with lap times around 5.2 seconds.
   Using 59' -.015's lines.
