Evo 40/46 Remote NVA Fits McCoy 35 Red Head
« on: February 02, 2015, 04:37:35 PM »
I purchased a remote NVA for an Evolution 46 engine from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Remote-NV-Assm-Complete-TPS/dp/B0006O5II4/

from source, Horizon Hobbies:

http://www.horizonhobby.com/remote-nv-assm-%28complete%29%3Atps-40-46-evo046874a

Interestingly enough, its mount matches the backplate bolts on my Testors McCoy 35 Red Head. This opens up possibilities. When I get a chance to bench it will know more.

Hi George,

Thanks for the info! (however, personally i don't like remote NVAs! LOL!!)  Still good to know.

Thanks again!

They are very nicely made and all metal as far as I can tell.  Cheap, too.

Interesting. I have one I took off my conversion but never thought to check it against the McCoy.

I took my spare McCoy 35 RH, mounted the needle on it. (Please note, the blackened head is due to use of an incompatible paint not heat resistant.) Then I bench ran it. Took a little tweaking to get the setting right, it runs at a nice 4 cycle barely breaking into 2 at 1.75 turns open. This needle works very smooth, I was able to leave it set and restart keeping the same setting without any further tweaking. It looks like I've got a winner here.  :)

I just wanted to add that to plug the spray bar hole where the old needle went, I used a short 2-56 screw with flat washer, worked like a charm.

Interesting enough, I pulled the head off this McCoy 35 and put it in an antifreeze solution in an old Poly Perk coffee percolator, along with my other Enya 09-III CL engine for cleaning. After soaking for about 12 hours under its gentle heat, much of the aftermarket paint coat came loose. Some of the OEM red paint could be scraped with a finger nail, but appears to be of stouter stuff.

Lo behold, there was a layer of baked on Castor underneath where the bare metal showed through, no wonder the dirty appearance. Otherwise, engine has good compression and good crankshaft fit. Not everything from E-Bay seems as it should. I used a brass wire brush to carefully remove as much paint and glow crud as I could. I may have to resort to a paint stripper, may be the environmentally friendly stuff as to not harm the aluminum, to remove it all down to the bare metal.

Update: I let it soak another day. All paint and glow grime came off with an old toothbrush. Now I can leave it in its natural aluminum or paint it.  ~>

Testors used a paper gasket for the head gasket. I hypothesize that Permatex Ultra Gray RTV ought to work as a head gasket as the heat of combustion by methanol is 9,800 BTU/lb. versus gasoline at 20,400 BTU/lb. We don't get the cigarette lighting temperatures on exhaust parts like one does with auto exhaust manifolds. Ultra Gray is known to seal in very thin coats, used in auto transmission cases and I've used it with success on motorcycle cases. That was sufficient without concern for burning or heat stressing the paper.

I ran the engine 4 times, an ounce at a time. The Permatex Ultra Gray held. I've got 2 other McCoy 35's, when I strip the paint off their heads will be the time to repaint them. Thanks to Dennis Lipsett's inputs, I only need one can of Duplicolor engine paint and not the primer ($$$). This setup is good to go.

Here's what it looks like in my Sterling Ringmaster S-1. Now I just need to fly it.  ;D

1st is good luck, 2nd is a charm. ;) After gasket kits came in from Chellie Romo (AKA http://www.ebay.com/usr/verysassyblond) today, I completed my 2nd Testors McCoy .35 Red Head Evo .46 remote NVA mod. Similarly, this 2nd engine I'm leaving head in unpainted bare aluminium for better heat dissipation. Her gasket set restored compression, quality stuff.  #^

I found that using just RTV doesn't work sealing the cylinder to crankcase joint. I had a McCoy with sub-piston induction (SPI). I don't think Dick McCoy intended this and I wasn't willing to experiment if I had a "high performance" McCoy on my hands.  n~ With her gaskets, fit and finish are restored.  :)

After installing Shellie's gaskets last night, I retweaked all bolts today then mounted the Testors McCoy .35 Red Head with APC 9x6 prop in my engine test stand. After the first run, I loosened the leaking glow plug and re-centred the copper glow plug gasket and re-tightened. That fixed the leak. After a total of 8 runs on a 1-oz tank, Shellie's gaskets held.

The engine is most happy at 4 cycle barely breaking into 2 at 1-1/2 needle turns of the Evo .46 remote needle open.

She ran with the reasonably "new" (actually NOS) Swanson Associates Fireball Hot Plug. It worked, but then decided to try another for the last couple runs, and I was glad I did. I purchased from E-Bay a card of 10 HSP Taiwan N3 Hot Glow Plugs. These were recommended for 4-cycle engines. I tried one in the McCoy and she is really happy with it, fired right up, easy starting, engine really sang with it. I bought these for $28 shipping included. Talk about quality, the copper gasket is cut with a more precise hole in the middle wihout much slop, doesn't require centering as it is already reasonably centered when install.

These N3 plugs should do me a lot of good in my legacy OS Max, McCoy, Fox, and Enya cross scavenged engines. ;) (Note, photo has my Fireball Hot glow plug temporarily placed in the lower left bubble.)

This 2nd McCoy engine for now is a good backup for the first.

Just wanted to say since, I've put about 12 1-oz tankfuls through this engine, last with a Masters 10x5 prop. Needle seems consistent, similar to my first McCoy it's 1.75 turns for a 4 cycle barely breaking into 2. For now I've put the motor away as a back up to my other McCoy. This Evo needle has a very fine thread, is easy to adjust not finicky, will do me a lot of good this season of flying.  ;D

Also wanted to add that the HSP #3 N3 plug is a solid runner, hasn't baulked thus far under rich running. I'll know more next time I fly.

Today I was only able to get in 1 flight early morning with the Ringmaster S-1, before winds picked up at the MADS R/C Field. I left setting where I bench ran it, 4 cycle barely breaking into 2. Worked like a charm and needle held its setting, broke into 2 in onset of a stunt and back to 4 returning to level flight. Last minute of flight, it leaned out slightly breaking into 2 back to 4 when heading into and away from the wind, so I'll need to tweak the needle slightly richer.

I've got a winner. (Sorry, no flight photos, was alone.)

I'll need to repair the wing saddle area. wing joint is cracked. Coverite Balsarite doesn't have sufficient shear strength. Top of Micafilm is glued to wing joing, but bottom at planking is where separation occurred. I'll figure a way to permanently repair.  ;D

Hi George -

Just want to say that I've had similar good results with this unknown brand remote/mount on my RH and much prefer it to the ST needle it replaced.

Hi Terry, needle you got looks like an OS RC NVA. If it works, that's the main thing. In this case, it was by accident that I found the Evo needle worked. Bought it for another engine, hadn't made use of it. One evening was looking at it and found out that it matched the McCoy 35RH backplate bolt spacing perfectly. Being fine threaded, it makes tweaking easy.

George,

An Evo remote NVA for their .36 engine fits my early Fox 25's perfectly!

For those who are finding it difficult to locate Fox 25 needles - the Evo .36 remotes appear to be a bargain price replacement at less than $10 NIP.

Good find, Bill. Given that Fox is out of the engine business, this ought to help some looking. I've got an NOS Fox 25R/C, one of the last with the MKX carburetor. If I ever decide to convert that to CL, that needle would provide a good option.

 George,
Can you give us some info on the "stooge" that you are using, such as size, weight and any other info?
I need to make one also.
   Thanks a lot

Gil, this is nothing special. All is it is scrap 3/4" thick ply of sufficient size to be heavy enough to not move with powered plane connected. A boot shoestring (cord can be used) is tied to a Romex electric cable staple, looped around the elevator front, with a loop tied in the other end, pinned with a good sized nail through that scrap plastic bracket that I got from who-knows-where. Nail has a string tied to it. When I run to the CL handle, I pull on the string, which releases the one end of the string, which in turn lets go of the model.

Some have commented a dislike for my stooge. It's not the most elegant, will probably chip paint off the fuselage eventually, but it works for me.
