Help with 46LA backplate
« on: January 05, 2013, 04:38:59 PM »
Hey guys

Could anybody tell me where I can find a metal backplate for a 46LA?
I can't seem to find it anywhere.
If anybody has one not in use, I'd be happy to buy...

Thanks a million

The FP 35/40 and Tower 40 backplate will fit, but this late in the game they're hard to find without an entire engine attached to them.

A small bead of gasket sealer(silicone) in the corner will make sure it doesn't leak.  Doesn't take much.

Yeah, but the backplate is broken... When my son landed his Nobler on the nose after a failed loop, the very nice needle bracket broke off, and apparently it was ok, but after  couple runs, the leak was big, and I don't think I can seal that... >:( >:(
Anyway, let's solve this little problem and get that engine back in action.
By the way Phil, did you get my email??

Hi Marcus,

Go to the "Members" tab and click, then click on the "D".  Curtis is about 1/2 way down the page, next to last of the "Cs".  His email address is there.

I have sent him email but got no answer... for now I've replaced for another plastic one, but really wanted the metal.
Thanks anyway Bill.

I'll try again

Marcus,

The aluminum back plate of Thunder Tiger GP-42 has just 0.2 mm more in diameter than the back plate of the OS LA 46 and it fits perfectly in the LA 46 if you take out this aluminum excess in a lathe. Some years ago I bought two of them in Tower Hobbies ( 6.00 USD each) and sent together an original in nylon, as model, to our friend Daniel of CB Motores at 1501 Interlagos Ave in SP and he did the work in the lathe, which is very easy for him. They fitted perfectly in the 46 LA, but particularly I didn’t see much difference in performance using a metal back plate or the original in nylon. The back plate of the .40 FP fits perfectly, too, but we don’t find them in the market.

Hi Luiz,

The metal backplate is not for increased performance, but instead it is for preventing leaks.  Unless you carefully use a silicone sealant on the plastic one, they leak in about 99% of ones used.  Just over tightening (doesn't take much) the backplate bolts can cause a leak with the plastic backplate.  I don't have time to put up with a leaking backplate if it can be prevented.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the information, I have never measured but I have to agree with the expectation that you presented of a high probability of leak failures in the case of a plastic back plate.
