Help Enya 35V Model 5225 stops upon removal of battery
« on: November 08, 2021, 02:16:35 PM »
This morning, we were trying to fly my brother Ron's newly built Shoestring Stunter that has an Enya 35V Model 5225 on it.  It ran well on the stand.  We are using 29% castor fuel.  It started easily but upon removal of the battery, it stopped. So we changed glow plugs and had the same result with 5 different plugs, the last one being a brand new Thunderbolt long and a new Odell??? long.  Same result.  Almost like clock work.  Remove the battery and it stopped.  The tank is a 3 or 3 1/2 gravity tank.  We also removed the fuel filter. Any ideas?

Try some different fuel. I have had a gallon not work right in the middle of a jug, from one flight too the next. Try anything, even if the oil content is less, just for one test run and that should tell the tale.

And the obvious:  If it's too rich, it will quit when you take away the glow.

Same thing happened to me...last quarter of a gallon of 29/5 all castor went from one week flying to the next week going bad. Might also want to check head and backplate screws for tightness.

Too much oil . Enya recommends 20% , I like 10% nitro 11 syn , 11 castor . This time of year 5% nitro works well .

The temperature was around 60 degrees.  Could that have made 29% Castor too thick?  Thinking about trying the 11/11, 5% or mixing some 11/11 with the 29. If we did that, what would be a good mix?

Cold fuel?  We used to heat our fuel in winter.  Probably not, most likely too much oil for temperature.  60 is not cold though.  How long are you leaving the battery on.  Maybe letting the engine heat up some might work.  I'd say "go electric!" but they quit when you take the battery off too!

I prefer 28-29% oil for Fox and Red Head McCoy engines but it seems too much for the better-fit Enyas and yes the problem seems worse when it’s cool.  I’d say viscosity is the culprit.  My Enyas like 23% very well.

60F should not cause any problems with the oil. If you keep the battery on does it keep running? With the battery on can you run it lean or rich as you adjust the needle? What prop, anything close to a 10x6 should work at least to get it running. Have you blown out the spraybar and wiped the needle to make sure there nothing in the fuel system? Do you have the pickup line aligned with the center of the spraybar? Last idea I have is check that the backplate bolts are tight and it is not leaking.

Let us know progress.

Best,    DennisT
