Half of muffler comes off B 40
« on: Yesterday at 02:02:06 PM »
On Sunday evening I flew a Banshee with a B 40 on it for the first time.  Right after it started the back part of the stock muffler came loose. I had had loosened it to change the placement of the ("stinger"???) outlet so that the unburnt oil would come out away from the plane.  In doing so, I had to take the nut off of the long bolt and I couldn't get it back on. So, I just took the back half off and pulled the bolt. The bolt is bent at the end and is not very amenable to a nut. I tried to take the long bolt out of an OS muffler but haven't got that accomplished. I haven't tried to just put on other mufflers including tongue mufflers.  I will continue to work on that.

However, the motor ran super, very powerful but used up 3 oz of fuel in less than 4 minutes.

When the exhaust is open like that, does it use more fuel?

Does it have more power?

BTW, the 1/64th inch ply washers worked great for pushing the prop out just beyond the end of the fuselage.

I still have to find an acceptable solution for a muffler.

The muffler on the Brodak engines is really pretty restrictive, and both the B-25 and the B-40 use the same muffler. I got a couple of the first run of the B-25 and was really disappointed in how it ran. It would needle fine, just no power, like it wouldn't pull the hat off your head. I posted about it here on Stunthanger, and maybe even on Stuka Stunt, and got a email from Tom Hampshire, whop asked me to send him the engine. After about a week, I got it back with the muffler modified to a straight through style, with a large-ish, short stinger. It was like a different engine!! I then thought that, well, if it helped the .25, I wonder how it will work on the B-40, and tried it on my Twister Shark and it then had an explosive break when the nose went up, but always came back to a 4 stroke in level flight. It really was incredible. Not wanting to get into another project trying to soften the break on the .40, I just put the stock exhaust back on. It sounds like you experienced something similar.

With the can on the muffler completely open, it will use a lot more fuel. To counter that it would need a smaller venturi. Take the long bolt and try grinding a slight bevel on the threaded end to see if you can clean up the threads and get the nut back on. If not, get a length of 2-56 all thread from the hobby shop and cut it to length and put a nut on both ends. You might want to solder the end that goes in front and that makes it more or less a bolt. If the all thread is a bit small, just put a flat washer Under the nuts, and maybe a dab of res silicone to seal the holes up.

  Type at you later,

DuBro pushrod stock is fine source of long bolts.  And don't get hung up on 2/56.  Drill baby drill and step up to 4/40.  A wheel collar, blob of solder or a 90 degree bend on one end and you can have 30" bolt.

Brodak sells a replacement bolt for the B25/B40 muffler.

Thanks so much.  These are all great suggestions. I already ordered some 2-56 all thread - Dubro through Amazon.  I might call Brodak tomorrow to see if they can send it with cheaper shipping than is shown.  Sometimes they can for small things.  Thinking about adding to my stock of Yoshioki 11x4.5 props for my LA-46's.  It's supposedly a replica for the TT 11.45.
