Fuel for Veco 19?
« on: August 12, 2014, 10:22:05 PM »
I've been running a couple of E-bay Veco 19s and have been using Sig 25% all castor due to low compression.  They are about impossible to start hot.  I've got a NIB Veco 19 from MECOA and wonder is I'll be able to run it on Sig Champion 20% 1/2 castor, 1/2 synthetic from break-in or if that's likely to just turn it into another worn out example like my others.

Thanks,
Gary

The perceived wisdom is to run these old style engines with at least 28% oil. Read Randy's explanation of fuels to use, which is pinned above. Running with some synthetic is also a good idea. Stops the castor crud hardening and doing nasty things like freezing the rod to the wrist pin.
I have a brand new old stock Veco 19 complete with the car conversion bits. When I get around to running this in, I will be using the 28% oil with maybe half and half synthetic / castor. brew.
If you can't hot restart the older engines, they probably are pretty worn. One trick is to squirt some fuel over the head to cool them down quicker. Used to do this when I was a kid and had to put up with old worn engines!

Regards,

Andrew.

I've read Randy's pinned article but his recommendation for use of 26-28% oil is based on plain bearing engines and the Veco is a BB engine, so it's not clear to to me that that much oil is necessary.  I'll mix fuel if I need to, but would like to run the same fuel as I use in my FPs (Sig champion 10% nitro, 1/2 castor, 1/2 synthetic) if it won't lead to premature wear.

After two pints of 30% oil fuel , I tried the 23% in the Twin . Wet Rag useless .
back to 30 and it howled .

They seem to take a bit of time to loosen off , so don't hurry it .

Got 88 mph timed in the speed thing , on 40% nitro the other day.
8x6 props 54 inch profile stunt thing . :##. ( .40 speed class . 52% !  >:D)

10 , 15 or 20 % nitro when run in . Not as consistant or easy to set on 5% .

BB yes but, the oil is for the poorly fitted iron piston. The pistons aren't round and the sleeves aren't tapered at all or reverse tapered. If you can hone out the bottom of the liner a bit it will greatly benefit your engine. Sometimes you can swap pistons/sleeves and get a better fit if you have the tools. I wouldn't run less than 20% castor in any iron/steel engine.
