Title: FP20 versions IDing
Post by: Gordon Tarbell on March 16, 2012, 08:07:18 PM
Seems after reading on this forum there are different versions of the FP20. can anyone post pics for identifying  the various sub species of these little jewels? I am thinking of trying to procure one for a plane package to fly the Clint Ormenson 25 stunt class. Are any of the Magnum and TT clones close enough to work with the same Brett Buck tune up?

As far as I know there are only two consequential different versions, the ABC liner and the iron liner. You can tell them apart from 20 feet if you know what to look for. The iron-liner version has a "raised" channel for the bypass, and the ABC is smooth.

First is iron-liner, second is ABC

Dang, I just bought one NIB that looks like the first photo. Now I will try to find one that looks like the smooth one for the ABC/ABN P&L since that is the one that gives the killer run.

Hi Gordon,

The first one I had was an iron/steel version.  Not much difference at all in the way it runs compared to the ABN version.

So it will still give the BBTU style run?

Mine did.  AFAIK, the timing is identical.  The MAJOR piece of the BBTU is the 2030 muffler.  Without it, you just get a good running .20 sized engine. ;D

Gordon, I have several of both versions of the FP20 and they all run pretty much the same. Maybe a slight advantage to the ABN version for a steadier run, but not enough to lose sleep over. Use the one you have, it'll be fine.

Edit: Hope you enter Stunt 25! It's a "just for fun" event.

Ok, I will bite, why is the 2030 muffler any better than any other?

I don't know for sure. I do know that the tuning of the pipe, er, muffler is just about right on the "e-2030" compared to the "862". The real reason is that all the initial testing was with the E-2030, because that's what I had,  and it turned out just about perfect.

Like Brett said, it works better than any other muffler for the desired run style.  With the 2030, you get a real "pipe style" run.  All the parts (APC 9-4, etc..) combined just work that way.  Do something different and it just ain't the same.
