Fox Eagle Engine
« on: September 15, 2009, 05:13:15 PM »
Hi guys,
Does anyone know anything about the fox eagle engine?? Is she any good for stunt, does she weigh to much, will she run like a tigre or enya???? I ran over one and was wondering if it would be worth the trouble to play with. I would appreciate any input, thank you Gary

The Eagle is a power house and depending on which Eagle that you have, can make a very decent stunt engine. You can order a cl venturie from Fox complete with NVA for about $17.00. I have a few of them and even one NIB Eagle with the flag on it, CL from the factory. I think that you might like it if you give it an honest chance.
The Eagle 3-4 are a bit hevey and take a bit of work to get a good stunt run from.

Hi Phil,

I'm not sure which fox eagle I have. It does have the flag on the side and the back plate. No muffler lugs all one piece case, doesn't feel to heavy. I e-mailed fox about the case and they quoted me $39.00 for the case. Its a R/C Motor so I would have to get the C/L set up. It never seems to work out for me to lock open the R/C carb. On most engine I've tried to lock open the carb, they seem to end up with about 3/4 opening on the carb to run properly. I appreciate any info you can share with me, Gary

Hi Gary, what you have is an early Eagle and it is a great candidate for a stunt engine. (Fox sold them in that configuration and I still have one NIB) As I mentioned earlier, you can call Sharon at Fox Manufaturing and order the cl venturie and NVA assebly for it for about seventeen dollers. You will also need a couple head shims in order to really dial it in (maybe). You will find it to be happy turning a 13 X 5 prop at around 9500 RPMS at launch. I run the same fuel in them that I run in my stunt .35s and get good results, although, the Eagle will be perfectly happy with a bit less oil (20 - 22%), it has ball bearings. You will find the Eagle to be as powerful as any of the other loop scaneged engines and more so than many.
Regards, Phil

Hi Phil,
Thank you for the information. I'm going to send the engine in and have a new case installed and purchase the needle valve assembly and get some head gaskets. Its a pretty looking motor and I'm glad to hear it will work out for stunt. I'll talk with Sharon to be sure we're on the same page. I was messing around the other day and weighted one of my merco 49 engine and with the tongue muffler the merco weighed the same as my OS 46. Yes, my merco 49 does make more power than my OS, could be just mine. I removed the OS and installed the merco, now I have a old sounding type motor and man what a ride. The merco 49 is like a kitten, she just purrs and this merco costed me $13.00?? Most look at the merco 49 and say why use it, the merco 49 is in the same case as the merco 61?? I use them, because they have a nice sound, start easy, don't use much fuel and they're a pretty motor, to me. I use only the lite case merco, the square bottom merco doesn't seem to run as well as the lite case. I really like the looks of the fox eagle, I hope she will run as well as she looks. I appreciate your help, thank you Gary

Thanks Dave,
I hope he jumps in here and will give us more information. Phil has been very helpful, when I send the engine to fox I'm going to order the items Phil suggested. Gary

Gary, The only reason to change that crank case on the Eagle is to get one with muffler lugs. If yours has the exhaust baffle, the holes in the stack are easy to close off and it could save you a few dollars. The next case has the two muffler lugs above and below on the center line of the stack and mufflers that fit them are kind of hard to find. If It was mine, I would consider making up a strap on tounge muffler and have the ears just cover the baffle holes in the stack. Just some thoughts and info. You will like the Eagle. BTW, I also like the Merco .49, they are sweet runners and do a fine job.

Hi Phil,

The engine weighs around 13 ounces, around the same weight as a K&B 61. You're correct, its a power horse. It has the R/C set up on her, so I'll talk with Sharon and get the C/L set up. I have a muffler that will fit over the broken exhaust port, so I'm going to play with her the way she is. Slanted plug, two rings, flag on side and the eagle on the back plate. The crankshaft is 1/4 inch, just like my veco 61. Makes for a strong shaft but ya have to drill most props to fit her. The test bed for the engine is going to be a ugly score, hope to doesn't tear off the wings???? Thanks for your help and I'll let ya know how it works out. I started the engine with the R/C set up and she ran okay but the needle valve is broken off and I can't adjust the setting. Might play around and drill she out and see if a normal needle will fit her???? Gary

Gary, you will like the Eagle and a little familerization will have you convinced it is just a big Stunt .35 (though it might take a head shim) Phil
