Title: Fox .59 RC engine question
Post by: Jim Oliver on May 31, 2007, 08:25:04 PM
Hey guys,
I may be able to acquire a Fox 59 RC engine--I am told the engine has some sort of carb with an exhaust baffle linked to the carb.

Were the RC engines timed differently from the CL engines?  I suppose if it has a lapped piston, all castor would be required.  What fuel would be needed if this should prove to have a ringed piston?

Thanks for any info you can provide.

Hi Jim,
I believe the Fox .59s had the same timing. I do have a suggestion or two, however. First, lose the exhaust baffle and install a good muffler. There are several sources, but Ithink MAACs has one of the best. Big and ugly, but fairly light.

Next, try to find a KAVAN carb that will fit the Fox intake boss. The Fox .59 carbs weren't the most advanced. OF course, if you can settle for no less than about ½-max power, the Fox carb will be OK; they just don't idle down and recover real well.

One other item is to build a solid nose section. The Fox .35 is often accused of being a "shaker", but this is mostly by folks who haven't tried the Fox .59.

Thanks for the reply.

I guess the REAL question is: Is the engine worth trying to convert to CLPA use?

If "yes" then the question(s) become  who makes the best muffler and venturi for it?  Can the threaded exhaust baffle pivot point be used to attach a muffler or will a strap-on be needed?

Some of you Fox experts educate me on this, please!!  ???

Thanks,
Jim

Dear Jim,

The threaded pivot point is far too small for securely attaching a muffler.  Semco made a muffler adapter for the Fox .59.  The Fox 59 stack is rectangular, so it wouldn't be too hard to even hand file an aluminum adapter and use a commercial muffler attached by a steel hose clamp.

The 59 RC engines used a ringed aluminum piston and were timed the same as the CL versions.  There were actually 4 different throttles, the last 2 had 3 jets.  Once set they would run flawlessly from a "tick-tick" idle up through full power. If you get the engine and want to hear something LOUD, wait till your neighbors aren't home and fire it up with no muffler!

I ran gallons of Fox Missile Mist (25% nitro) though mine swinging a 12-6 prop.  Being a ringed engine, you don't have to use pure castor oil, but one of the fuels from Morgan or Wildcat with 2% or so castor and the balance synthetic are OK.

Thanks for the pix, Bill. They will help me to figure which version this is when I get it.

Any suggestions as to venturi diameter, correct spraybar, etc. to convert to stunt use??

Thanks,
Jim
