Fox 36X Combat Special Mk ll
« on: February 11, 2018, 04:57:41 PM »
Looking for anyone who has any information and/or experience with this engine. Looking for starting procedures on a bladder setup. Did this engine come with a head gasket? I have one that Bootlegger and I started today. Ran 14,000 RPM on 10% but was hard to dial in. We also put a head gasket on it and changed Phillips head screws to hex screws. The insert was missing but I am running on a pacifier anyway. Any info would be helpful. This is my first combat engine experience. Thanks, Tim

Also what fuel to use? I ran this engine 4 times today for a total of 6.5 ounces of PowerMaster 10% (pink) with the oil content bumped up to 23% with Castor. It originally is the 30/70 blend of castor/synthetic. Thinking about maybe going 24-25%? Engine appeared to run cool. Thanks, Tim

Tim I have / had many of Marvin Denny's MK IV and MK VIs ...never had the engine you have

They like 15%~25% Vitamin N and anywhere from 23% ~28% oil... I mix own and the oil is mostly Castor with 5% UNCON LB 625 synth I get from Riche's Brew....

I have friends who will up the N to 40% but they shatter cranks and I don't ... APC 9x6 sport, APC 8x7, Rev Up wood 8X8

Thanks Fred. I will keep the vitamin N at 10%. I heard this engine does not like crankshafts! This engine was bought to power the Sneeker. Tim

Tim I bet 15 to 25%  will not detonate....if you seek 3 to 2 second laps.... not sure of your age,,, 3 to 5 second laps for me these days is max

adrenaline junkie.... but snuffing a fun airplane due to too fast n dizzy has me with low pitch and low nitro now for any old skool combat air-frames I have

Just flying for fun. My other Sneeker has a modified ST G21 35 on it and is a blast to fly. This 36X is a real beast and should be really fun to fly. Plan on going with a 10x5 prop to feel it out. At 59, next month, I am not exactly a spring chicken either. Lol Tim

I use to run those quite a bit. Fuel was 15% nitro and 25+% castor fuel. I used 8/8 props on them with suction tank. Started easy and ran well.

What model planes did you use these engines on? I am thinking a Sneeker with web spacing between the ribs along the spar line to support the wings. Of course, I am not going to fly combat with it , just for sport flying and dialed down a bit. Tim

I built several "Super ??? something"  Had elliptical wing shape. Some body will pop up with the name ,I can't remember it. Plane was not seen much as it was more work to build the wing than the straight wing used by most flyers. I bought a kit and just copied it after that. I did build a larger version but it flew the same as stock version.

Ah, yes, the Super Twister. I built one back in the 60s from Model Airplane News plans, as I remember. Kinda a PITA model to build with its tapered wing, achieved partly by bending the spars and leading edge. Not worth the effort over the simpler designs of the day, in my opinion.

I used a metal tank and my K&B Stallion 35 (on suction) and had fun with it. It had lots of line tension and was the first model I successfully flew inverted with. I just kept telling myself "If you get in trouble, give it down!" Worked for me.

Tim... there are obviously old school preferred at the time combinations... just cuz at the time THAT was what was available

F0R PURE nostalgia a period correct constructed plane and Engine would be preferred BUT then... we have all sorts of OFF the Reservation examples....1950s to 1970s combat can be found to have both the standards that seemed to win and the wildcats experimenting with different combinations

Point is there is NO standard or CORRECT combo plane and engines.... yes certainly there with guys like Wooten, Mears, Scarzini, Berryman who all had THEIR recipe that worked for them

BUT the kid who showed up every now and then with something different... seemed to do ok against the top dogs...

I proposed I was building a Howard Rush Nemesis II from Pat Johnston near perfect Lazer short kit to be PowerPC by a new Nelson N36c engine

ever one said it would fold the wing and not last.... none seemed to read that I was junk flier with no hard G maneuvers in my aged kit of tricks..

For simple fun fly not serious competition YOU can put any .75 to .25 engine on any of the combat wings and go have fun

Since someone brought up the Super Twister, here's my copy from the good old days. ST 35C, Revup 9-6, pen bladder. Future wife holding-

I built all the hot combat jobs through the 1950's. I had 4 of the Fox X motors when the local hobby shop got them in by mistake. I used them on Class C Free flight for a short time.
I got the Super twister and it seemed more stable than the other combat models I was flying at the time. It also seemed to always have a speed advantage. I was doing reworks on the ST/35 for many people but I was getting more speed out of these Foxes.  Those were fun times and it was very inexpensive hobby at that time.
I have a movie of myself flying the Fox powered Super at St Pete jr College in 1972 using a U-Realy . I had just moved to Florida and I was desperate to fly something so I got out a Super but could/t find the lines.  My wife still remembers launching my combat models. She says " it was thrilling and noisy"
