Fox 35 spraybar question
« on: October 07, 2017, 10:26:16 AM »

I have 3 Fox 35 C/L engines. I noticed all 3 have the holes in the spray bar oriented in different locations. One has the holes( looking down into the venturi ) one faceing the front towards the prop and other side faceing the engine. One has the holes straight up and down. Another has them in between the first two. What is the correct orientation of the holes in the spray bar? Two of the needle vavles are in good condition the third is bent. What are my chances of getting a replacement needle valve assembly for it? These engines will be used in vintage models and run very little, but I would like to get all three going.........Gene

Gene, this is all pending on what spraybar your Fox .35 has. The older Fox's came with a single holed spraybar. This style should be facing down the venturi on the same angle as the stack. A bit hard to do as it's a guess due to the fact you can't see the hole. Some claim that having it towards the rear slightly is more effective. I've never had this problem on a Fox .35 with a single hole spraybar, the engine is not that picky. However, on the later model Fox's the spraybar has 2 holes. Due to Fox's very crude machining methods, one hole is typically higher on the spraybar. I position the holes so that when looking straight down the venturi you can just notice the tops of the holes. If this spraybar isn't orientated correctly, it can affect the way the engine breaks into a 2 stroke when pointed nose high. Fox has been sold to Mecoa. Mecoa only carries the latest version spraybar and needle which uses the o-ring internally. A nice setup but it can only be mounted on one side of the engine and it must be removed to access the bolt to the engine lug in order to mount the engine. Gene,
The Fox spraybar with the two holes is the stock arrangement. If you look carefully you will notice that the holes are slightly off the centerline of the spraybar. The correct position for this arrangement is to have the holes positioned so the low offset side is on the bottom facing the crankshaft and across the venturi bore. When you do this they will be just out of line of sight looking down the bore. If you have a replacement single hole spraybar point it either straight down the bore or at 90 deg to the back of the venturi.

If you use the original Fox needle valve make sure you put a small piece of fuel line tubing against the face on the needle to seal the threads.

Probably true, but it is unclear whether or not that is by design. In any case, setting the hole axis perpendicular to the venturi bore is probably still the right way. It will run in any of the other positions, too (and that used to be one of the many possible tweaks people did), but I would certainly start with it as described.

Thanks guys for your help in this matter. It appears I hove both styles of spray bars amongst the three engines. Your information gives me a good place to start. Thank you all again......Gene
