K&B 3.5 Aero
« on: July 21, 2012, 08:39:05 AM »
I may be able to get my greedy little hands on a K&B 3.5 with the aero parts. Has anyone tried to do anything with one of these? The C.I. come out to .21. The engine is timed to be throttled so it shouldn't be too over the top. It's a rear exhaust, or front. The venturi is frickin huge. I was thinking I may be able to make a smaller venturi for it for tuning purposes. I have no idea what the true performance of this engine would be with a prop on it. I have seen videos of it in bots and it is a pretty strong engine. I was thinking it might be good in a smaller built up fuse type plane.

I've seen one or two flown in freeflight models.  It is a high RPM, high power engine.  Not something I would try to build a stunt model around.  I've not seen an engine review, however.

Me either and mecoa has no info on the aero aspect of the engine. I know she is a high power engine but wouldn't the throttle requirement make it condusive to a smaller venturi. I may be able to use it on a 450 inch built-up fuse model. Maybe someone else has put a tach on one and can tell me if it is possible. If not I may just pass on it.

I had Jim Lee make up a venturi for me with a slightly smaller opening then usual and it is still a high rev engine. It can be fun on the right model but I don't think you will be able to tame this one too easily. large props might work but there are better choices to use for stunt
I enjoyed using this engine in R/C and it was popular I think in free flight. I also used them in the early days of R/C cars with good results

Hi Nathan,

I would think you would have more success with a lot of other engines. ;D

LOL yeah Bill I have that feeling as well. I have more projects in mind than time to do them, taking on another one would be silly. However, I like having projects to work on  ~>

I have two of them for free flight.  Very happy at 23,000 RPM very high exhaust duration.  I wouldn't consider trying to use one for sport or stunt CL.

"Holy Cow" Harry Carey. LOL Thanks Randy that is exactly what I wanted to know. I don't think it's realistic to calm it down from 23,000. 17 or 18 maybe but not 23. I bet that free flight takes off like a frikin rocketship.

A friend gave me one of the K&B 3.5 engines.  If one were to lower the ports would this tame it for at least semi stunt purposes?

Yes,you could. But why bother there are much better engines already available and you do not have to go through the process of development and experimentation to try and get a stunt engine out of a purposefully designed race motor

Yeah without doing some surgery this looks to be a lost cause. Surgery is not a bad thing as it has heled alot of engines in the past. If you have one why not try and use it. I hadn't acquired the engine yet so I am going to void the issue. Maybe I could make a racer out of it.

Dennis, I take Visa, Master Card, money orders or cash.  If it is more convenient then just send another type of engine.   SLEEPY

In that size range just get an LA25S and you'll be much happier for stunt.

Thanks Randy I didn't have any specific model in mine when I was considering trading for the engine. I do like my os engines and have them on just about everything. I am looking at building something a little different some day and I thought maybe this thing would be neat in an s-1 or something like that or I could possibly build a combat around it. I don't have an LA 25 yet though and am waiting to see how I like my LA .15 before I get one. I tried the .15 before and quickly went back to an older os .15. This may have been a quick judgement on my part. Anyhow lol I can ramble at times wow. Thanks for the input.

Hi Nathan,

You got me curious. ;D  What did you not like about the .15LA?  What was the plane and what was your "set up"?

Thanks

Depending on the Plane size, the Enya 20 C/L  and  25 SS  C/L work very well

Bill, the plane was or sorta still is lol a dutch boat company design lol. It is a semetrical thick wing design with lines similar to a FS. The engine was just flat. I broke it in as per O.S. instructions but it just didn't have the power of the older max. I believe that with fuel tank pressure and a little tuning I would have been happy with it.
Thanks Randy I don't own any Enya's yet but tht doesn't mean they aren't on my list.  >:D
