Fox 35 fuel tank problems
« on: May 15, 2016, 08:21:56 PM »
My super ringmaster is down with a bad fuel tank.  It is green again and plugged up again and I am sick of trying to clean it.  It has a Fox 35 stunt on it.

So, can I put a non-pressure bladder into the tiny fuel tank compartment and expect a decent run out of it?  OK, I guess I am going the 1/2a balloon bladder route with this idea. I am trying to get a 4-2-4 break.  The plane is for sport flying not serious anything.

The compartment is barely bigger than the existing fuel tank.

The other choice is to make a new tank... I just don't want to.

Car dealers seem to have access to really large balloons. You might talk to them about a source. Otherwise you will probably be limited to 1-1/2 ounce or so.
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!

I'd have to cut into the wood, the plumbing is all wrong...  That is just trading headaches around.  Not a bad thought though.

Phil,
What material did you make the tank out of? For it to go green did you use shim brass? The only time I had a tank get green was when it sat for 6 month or so. My tanks are all K&S 0.008" tin plate.

The tank is original to the plane as far as I know.  I am at least the second person to fly it, and it had a few other owners too.  I think it is a Perfect wedge... but the tank was mashed a little to fit the space.

I would make a pinched corner type using some gallon olive oil tin can, slightly thicker than .008, more like .015 but I have a pile of it.  Just needs an acetone wash to remove any remaining residues.

the George Aldrich uniflow at the bottom, but probably not uniflow in this case.

I have some rather large balloons that hold close to 3 oz of fuel without stretching, they are called "large party balloons" from the grocery store.  This is why I wanted to know about a Fox on a non-pressure bladder.

If that balloon ruptures with that much fuel in it, it can cause a lot of damage and glue failure. It's much easier to fix the tank. Seeing that Perfect used brass tubing, this is most likely the source of the green goo. The tubing in Perfect tanks if it hasn't already is probably split inside which causes a lot of problems and you can't see it. I've done this many times where I made a removable top block to access the tank.

Phil,
You can use the non-pressure bladder but do a test first to make sure the fuel doesn't melt it. One way I have seen it done is to put the balloon inside a plastic tank without the stopper. This contains the fuel in the event of a leak. The arrangement I've seen is to have the pickup tubing have several holes along it's length, this is suppose to keep the balloon from cutting off flow as the fuel is drawn out. Keep all the edges smooth.

Other option is to order the Brodak tank over the phone and tell them to ship it via regular mail (you can't do this online). This is around $3 vs $12 for the normal priority mail.
