Fox 35 angle plug hemi heads
« on: April 10, 2023, 01:16:18 AM »
Hey fellas,

I had a customer asking today about angle plug hemi heads.

How much interest would there be in me making a run of them?

I'd need something to copy, I don't have any left in stock myself.

Likewise the stuffer backplates? Can do (hard anodised) if there is enough interest.

Brian

A friend of mine says YES to stuffer backplates, NO to angled plug hemi-heads if you're referring to the 3 bolt Fox 35.

There have been several angled hemi heads over the years. At least one that angles from the exhaust side, and one that was blue anodized and angled from the rear. I have no idea which performed better. The one angled from the side is what came with some L&J Fox .35s. I have a couple of the side angled heads and have been looking for the blue rearward head. I think Tom Muggleston ( ??) made those?? I just want to do a simple flight test of whatever I can find on a Ringmaster and a Barnstormer to see how they work. I think the side angled versions were intended for profile sidewinder use and the rear angled blue he3ads for up right or inverted use in full fuselage models. Any time any of these heads pop up on the market, they get snapped up pretty quickly. Fox, of course, did the straight up, head button style hemi head.

I have one each of the different Hemi heads, and I find the Blue Magic head with the rear slant plug to be the best one. I should’ve bought several when Tom was making them years ago. They seem scarce as hens teeth now.

I’d be in for at least 3 heads and backplates if you make them.

This pretty much is what I thought I remembered reading and hearing years ago.  don't think Muggleston wasn't in business for very long, was he? And that is what helps make them uncommon. I would vote "Blue" in this respect. I'm curious as to what it look like in respect to the combustion chamber shape and size.

Brian,

There are several sources of ST type needles that work well. OD and Enya needles work well. The Fox .35 stock needle valve works well when you address it's short comings. Many sources of mufflers also out there. The stock muffler has worked well for me when I have needed the nose weight. There is a guy named Stan that makes all sorts of tongue mufflers that is on facebook  and advertises on the FB Market Place. There is hours worth of reading hear on the forum about these two issues if you do some searching. Lots of sources for that other stuff, but no one making the hemi heads or stuffer back plates.

If the blue magic head is the preferred option a loan of one to copy would be great.

One of the guys in my club told me to file a small notch in the button that points to a fin or a head bolt so you can see if it rotates on you when changing a plug. He said that happened to him and he ruined a 40th. Anniversary piston & liner that he had been breaking in very carefully after lapping it and it was shot when the baffle rubbed on the slot in the button. T.J.

Might pay to ' pin ' it .

I think I have a button head that is pinned, but you can't take the pin hold all the way through the button, for obvious reasons.

Brian,
As long as you have a wait list a stronger crankshaft (like the old High-zoot Randy had) for the Fox 35 would be great.

We tried producing these, but our grinder can't do the crankpin due to the layout. I searched pretty hard for someone that could do them for me with no luck - so I have a box of 20 "blanks" here that I can't finish.

Brian,
How about a press-in shrink fit crankpin? This has been done on several successful engine designs seems you need enough web thickness and very good tolerances on the hole and pin. Maybe Randy S can add a comment on how the high-zoots were done.

I considered that - but not enough web thickness to be confident about it.

The angle plug hemi heads, hard anodised stuffer backplates and ABC piston/liner/rod/pin sets are ready.

I'm starting to work my way through the waiting list.

I didn't make any spare rods or pins. But my pins are a larger diameter (for more bearing area) and hollow - so they don't retrofit to a stock piston.
