I don't have an owner's manual for the 61 Surpass, but I do have one for the 26/40 Surpass. I would assume it to be similar regarding fuel.

I run VP racing (Powermaster) 10% nitro AIR fuel which is 18% total oil (80% syn/20% castor blend), but I add a bit of castor to boost the total oil to 20% as recommended in the OS manual. The resultant oil blend after adding castor is 68% syn/32% castor.

Other guys I fly with just use the straight 10% AIR fuel (18% oil).

But I always follow owner's manuals because I don't claim to know more than the OS factory engineers.

If you can afford it, try some Powermaster YS-20/20. it's 20% nitro and 20% all synthetic. I only have one OS four stroke in a profile scale model, but the Powermaster runs well in it and in the Saito .56 that I have in a Top Flite Score ARF. The engines never get sticky, stiff or gummy with all the extra moving parts inside. The main trouble with it is the price!! Last I checked at the hobby shop it was 60 bucks a gallon!!

Two-strokes get sticky, too, and the clearances of the best engines are far tighter than the Saito, so - same thing. David was running YS 20/20 at the WC this year.

I got two gallons just before the NATs, it was $36 a gallon, slightly more than 15% but not unreasonable.

WHERE DID YOU FIND IT FOR $36 A GALLON!!!????   The local hobby shop still has some at some at $60 a gallon, but the web site is now showing $65 a gallon!! I have a couple of gallons stashed , and haven't been flying the Saito because the airplanes needs recovering, but if I were to run across it that cheap, I would get as much as I could carry!! I had a hard time finding it on the VP website. They have shuffled stuff around quite a bit. They show the 15% " Air" mix at $55 a gallon and the much liked GMA 10/22 mix with 22% total oil is $53 now. I don't think they discount at all either because they use their own trucks to deliver, and this does eliminate the hazmat fees.

RC Country Hobbies in Sacramento. It's only 2000ish miles one way, so, just run over and get some. For me it is about 120 miles, but also conveniently near the Shulz Stunt Farm site, so, two birds with one stone. Nonetheless, 240 miles is about 8 gallons of gas, at $5 a gallon, that is $40 worth, so it costs more to get it than the actual product.

It sounds like to me they are charging for the hazmat shipping, I think that is avoidable if you get it trucked on a pallet, or something like that.

No, I don't think so, not on the unit price. On their web site they state that anything shipped by 3rd party would involve hazmat fees, added to their shipping charges. So I went through the motions of ordering one gallon of GMA 10/22, and $53.65 a gallon. When I put in my address, the rest of the charges came up, shipping plus taxes, and it comes to a staggering $208.47 !! And that IS for ONE gallon. They don't show case quantities on the web site for some reason, they used to or I just missed it. They must only deal with cases through dealers now. Their "dealer network" is very confusing!! I went through all this trying to get fuel back during the planedemic.  The shop that I worked at for 35 years couldn't help me then. I checked with them recently and they don't get any discount on case purchases to be able to offer any discounts on case purchases and they have been a Powermaster dealer for a long time. The shop hasn't had an I/C engine in stock for almost 15 years, because there is no one buying them around here, so they don't stock engines, and fuels sales have greatly slowed also. For some reason, they only want to stock the YS-20/20. I tried navigating the dealer network thing when trying to find the 50/50 nitro product. Just about any gas station can be a VP dealer it seems, and some of the motorcycle shops I checked with that have the sign in the window, really don't stock anything, "But we can order it!" That's when I was told that VP ships most of their stuff by their own trucks to be able to manage that part. The home heating oil place I finally was able to buy some at, actually sells performance fuels and methanol to local race tracks of several kinds, so I guess their sales volume is better, and the sales person there told me the same thing about the hazmat deal. They get their orders every week or two by a VP truck so no hazmat fees to buy a single 5 gallon can. But having said that, they could not do any better that web site prices on packaged model fuel. That was earlier this year, and gallon prices were just a few bucks less. At this point, I don't know what to believe anymore unless it's something right in front of me.

All I know is what they tell us when we either buy it off the shelf or order it (by the case).  I sincerely doubt that they are running a charitable organization.

Powermaster YS 20-/20 was $39.98 here a gallon going way back to when I got my TF Score/Saito.56 , about 2010, primarily because of the extra nitro in it and the all synthetic oil. I only use 3.5 to 4 ounces a flight so it did last a while, even when I was flying it a lot ( before the covering started to come apart ) and didn't have any price increase until the plannedemic hit, then did the jump to $60 a gallon. That was quite along time, really. That is the only airplane/engine I run it in. I'm stocked with a couple of gallons if I ever get around to recovering the airplane. it's fun to fly the the Saito is just so different, kind of a nice change of pace to fly for a while. Lou Rankin mixes a pretty good substitute at a much better price, if I get to a point of really needing more.
