Fox 15 bb break in and fuel
« on: September 17, 2013, 04:10:02 PM »
I know there are some strong opinions on here about the Fox .15. I am building a Akromaster for my son and a fox .15bb is what I have so it is what I am using. The manual says to use at least 20% castor fuel, what percentage nitro should I use? What is the proper break in procedure? What size prop?

Thank you,
Jim

Jim the nitro content isn't critical but I would use 10-15 % on the .15 and add oil till you get 23-25 % at least for break in.  Later you may be OK with 20 but I use at least 23 on every engine I have and up to 29% on my old classic style motors,  of which I would consider most any Fox.  Break it in by running it moderately fast but cool with a smallish prop.  Maybe a 7x4.  Start in a fast four cycle for the first 15 minutes,  go to a 2/4 break for 15 then an easy 2 cycle for another 15 minutes.  It should then be ready to fly but set it a little rich for a few runs.  Put your flight prop on for the last few minutes on the stand.  I would guess that will be something in the 8 inch by 4-6" pitch range.  A mistake is often made by putting on too much prop and making the engine run too hot.

Lapped iron engine so it needs to be run for short times and allowed to cool off between runs.

If at any point you cannot hold the head of the engine stop and let it cool down.

Start on prime  x6
run for "a few seconds" rich (this really won't be long enough to adjust the needle) x6
Run rich 4-cycle for 15-30 seconds x6
run rich 2-cycle/lean 4-cycle 15-30 seconds x6
(this is probably 1 hour+ and my arm is about to fall off from flipping)

Now you can start seeking longer run times and higher RPM.  Run a quart through the engine before putting it on the plane to fly.
