Title: Evo woe - NO - - Evo go!!!
Post by: Ralph Wenzel (d) on October 12, 2008, 08:58:54 PM
Brett Buck to the rescue. He said to get rid of the muffler for a while at first. Did three short runs on the new Evo that way, then used the tongue muffler. Still not an easy start, but better. And it'll get mo' better as I learn what makes the engine happy. This thing has more pinch at TDC than any engine I've ever run! It even squeaks when I flip it over wet.

When in the too much fuel/squeaky piston mode try setting the prop against compression then slapping it down against the direction of rotation. Some call it a "bump" start.  Takes a little technique but works well with engines that exhibit this characteristic. This is probably better than trying to force the prop through when it the prop is pinching up top.  I have found it works well with my Evo .36.

Hi Pete,
I start all my 4-strokes the way you suggest. I tried it with the Evo, but no go. The "back bump" might have worked better had I not been using a wood 9-5 prop. Something heavier, like an APC guillotine should work better . . .

Point taken - I use an 11x4 when I use that method.  It works for me but not 100% of the time. I also have noticed that I usually do not get a pre-start "bump" when turning the prop prior to engine start...it may just be my technique but it does make it a little more difficult to determine when the engine is ready to go.
