Title: Evo 60 Up-Date.
Post by: Robin_Holden on February 14, 2013, 04:23:18 AM
Greetings fellas from a pretty damp Charente in S.W.France.

Started flight testing with my Evo 60. Findings are as follows .

She seems to perform best with the following set-up :

Fuel : A French brand called 'Rocket Fuel' . It's a synthetic mix but they don't mention the percentage. I 'assumed' an 18% mix so I added Castrol 'M' to take the overall lube' mix to 20%. I've found this fuel to be excellant quality .

Prop' etc : After a lot of experimenting I've settled on a TT 12.5 x 5.5 , launching at around 8,800 rpm. In the mild weather conditions here yesterday , around 9/10 degrees , the needle setting was at around 5 and a quarter turns open.
I was circulating at around 5.2 secs on my 65 foot lines.

Evo tongue muffler with NO exhaust pressure.

Just as an aside the model was a profile ship , based on an excellant article written in CLW a couple of years back by Bradley Walker. Well worth a read.
Briefly to remind colleagues , he suggested using a large engine , say a 60 , in a smaller say 40 sized 'plane as long as there was NO weight penalty . He advocated using the 60 size engine in a 'deep' low RPM setting .

The plane I am using has around 580 sq. inches of wing area weighing in at approx' 47 oz . Wing loading therefore around 11.8 oz/sq.ft. She loafes around , not too much pull on the lines and even a really lousy pilot like me can cope .

Just to finish , the Evo [ in my very amateur opinion ] represents great value for money. It's docile , a second flick starter , dead easy to set up out of the box once run-in . Just fit the smaller of the two venturis supplied and bingo !

End of plug for the Evo 60 , supplied as usual with polite efficiency by Randy.

Regards from the Charente ,

Robin [ ex-pat Brit' in the Charente full of ex-pat Brits' ]

Hi, Robin, thanks for the excellent report.  I, too, believe the Evo 60 is a nice stunt engine...easy to set up, easy starting, with good stunt power. Hope to see more of these flying this season!

It just so happens that I have a TT 12.5 x 5.5. and an Evo 60. I will give it a try. Thanks! 8)

TWO flips! Why is it so hard to start? What's your starting "drill"?  ;) Steve

Steve , good morning.

What's my starting 'drill'  ?

Same as usual .... A couple of flicked chokes,  on with the plug igniter and she'll start up after the 2nd flick ....Uusually  !

Oh I forgot to mention in my missive the following fellas.

The Evo is very relaxed regarding fuel ! I have used an all castor 80/20 brew without any problems.
Just a different needle setting , around 3 and a half turns open on the needle.

Robin.

Probably not broken in yet.  Based on the Evo 36 after about 1 gallon it starts to come alive then gets even better.  Less vibration too.  I was getting 1 flip starts choking 3 times after the finger gets wet and 15 times no choke, connect battery and get a bump then flip.  Green Cool power worked well for me.

I am using a Xoar 12x6 prop on a 74 oz plane.  About 82 to 83 hundred RPM gives good lap speeds and great engine runs.

How much fuel does your Evo 60's use for the pattern?

Hi, Stan, with the smaller venturi, we're using 5.75 ounces of 10% nitro, regular Powermaster (17% total oil).  No muffler pressure, uniflow
metal tank.  Nice, soft 4/2/4 break, very repeatable.
