EVO-36 BREAK

Just got around to runnin my Evolution 36 on a plane.  Engine has the smallest venturi, 11/5 prop, and an os needle screwed into the side of the venturi.  Runs great in a wet 2, but I have been unable to get a 4/2 break.  Does this stock engine have a 4/2 break?  Since this engine has only about an hour of total time could be it needs more tme. Any thoughts?

Try an APC 10.5x4.5 prop. The 11x5 may be putting too much load on the engine for it to 4/2/4. I get a high RPM 4/2/4 run using this prop. I did put one additional head gasket though, that may help.  8)

I have an evo 36 mounted on a midwest magician and it has a nice 2-4 break. The stock engine with the smallest venturi wanted to run away so I reduced the venturi size with a piece of brass tubing , got rid of the rear mounted needle valve and replaced it with one from a tower hobbies 40. I had to add a couple of head shims to reduce the compression. I am running it on powermaster 10-22 fuel with an APC 10-5 prop. I am now very happy with the way it runs.

Richard, mine runs great now. Lots of break in time, 2 head shims, small venturi , os .15 r/c needle valve. Gets very consistent runs with a slight break. My good runs came after changing tanks to a clunk with the uniflow running way to the back , just ahead of the pickup. After a lengthy break in time , it went from 6 minutes on 6 oz. to 6 1/2 minutes on 4 1/2 oz. Mounted on a P-40, it works great.  I like it a lot , may buy another! Oh yeah, TT 11x4.5 prop and 10/22 fuel.

Needs a lot of break in time.  I did this flying the plane after 15 minutes on the bench.  As you run it it gets much better.  Cool Power all synthetic (green) 10% ran very well for me.  The previous posters off good advice.  I get a soft 2/4 break with an APC 10 1/2 x 4 1/2 or an APC 10 x 5 with a ground launch at 10,100 RPM.  One flip starts too.

I did the same setup on the venturi. I add a head shime. The best thing I did was going to 10% nitro and a os #8 plug. This made the engine run great. Then I started trying different props, so far the brodak 11-4 is the best. I want to try the10.5 - 4.5 but dont know if I need too. It does a 2-2 brake. There is no more ran away with this motor. My brother first used the os #8 in a brodak 40, it evened out the run. I tryed it in a enya 30 and it work great. The 36 was going in the trash can if this had not worked. It is now the best running motor I have.

I was at toledo this year and they had the new 36 there. It will be out in june so they say. It will have a new venturi like the 60 and they are a little smaller.

Man, an Evo 36 on a Magician. That sounds like sweet sport flying combo. Not going to get much better than that on a sport profile.  Visions of lazy eights in the back of the school yard are flowing through my head.

One of the last 2 EVO 36's I bought a few months ago was in the new box showing a conventional needle valve setup and advertising a higher compression head.  However, in the box was the same old EVO that had the rear NV.  I called Horizon and asked because I had heard that EVO was going to offer a retro-fit NV and venturi.  Horizon knew nothing about it and couldn't explain the new box showing the engine to come in the future.

If I remember correctly both the Evo 36 and 60 were released a few months after their first "available by" date. In the 60's case I'm sure it was because of further development issues and wanting to get it right (which they did). The bottom line is I would not engrave that June availability date in stone quite yet. 8)

It was April when I was there, and I seen them back in stock three weeks ago. I look at parts and they were the same as before. I have been going back and looking and I see that they are out of stock again. I did see it at toledo and talked to someone there that was at the engine display. That was when I was told that the new motor was coming out in June, he also said there were not going to make anymore contorline arf's.

I do think that they will have the new engines and most of their backordered parts in by the end of June. From talking to Horizon I think that they only had a very small replacement order come in to have some stock on hand and tide them over till the new ones arrived. As more people use and get to know these engines I think tht they will realize that it is a good deal for the money. The NVA and venturi change should take care of most problems.
