Engines and props...
« on: April 18, 2007, 09:17:24 AM »
Posted this question in another thread but think it got lost in the noise... I read about prop recommendations for various engines, for example Super Tigre 46, 51 and 60, then I see where the same prop like maybe a 12-6 is being used/reccomended for all 3 engines. This sure makes be wonder... Isn't the reason we go to a larger engine so we can swing a larger prop?

I replaced a ST46 in my Skylark with a ST51... If I use the same prop what have I gained other than two more ounces in the nose.. I don't understand....

Hi Bob,
I assume you want to keep the same prop to maintain the same lap speed which begs the question why did you change the engine in the first place.  Anyway I have a couple of Windy's videos and he goes into this very subject on one of them.  According to Windy the best reason for more engine is it gives you more leeway in adjustment for the engine.  It make the engine more user friendly and less a chore to dial in.  He also says that larger engines are working less to achieve what the smaller engines are giving you and since they are working less there is less chance of over heating and running away.

Also there is a power surplus that when condition require can be tapped into.   Things like windy days.  (no pun intended)  I found this very usefull this past weekend at a contest.  I was flying P-40 and was the last flight of the day.  The wind was staring to blow and I reached for some additional power to get through the pattern.  If I had already been maxed out I would not have flown the flight.

Anyway that what I understand about moving up in power

The above make a lot of sense.

I would add that the big difference is in TORQUE.

Any Engine, 40 50 60 155... spinning a 12x6 at 8300rpm are all producing the same HP, but not all of them will be spinning with the same torque.

Torque has to do with acceleration and changes of RPM. With more torque the engine will vary less RPM if any when an opposed force acts upon the prop, for example when you maneuver.

More torque will accelerate the plane quicker from ZERO to its set speed, and once at the set speed it will resist more to external forces.

So my understanding is that bigger engines will help you fly at a more constant speed.

Does that makes sense?
