The 45-I (6001) is generally regarded as a better stunt engine, and as good as an ST46.  They're reasonably easy to get hold of.  I believe the 45-II has different timing - not quite as stunt-friendly.

I used the 6001 for many years back in the 60's-70's with great success and was sometimes asked by other flyers (like Peter White) how I got it to run like an ST46. All I could say was that it was bog standard and all I did was fill the tank and go fly . Later I bought a 6002 when they first came out with the thought that newer should be better. Unfortunately it wasn't as good for stunt, not that there was anything bad about it, but the run was quite different being timed more for RC so it went into a drawer where it remains today.

I run mine on GMA 10% 11/11 with a RSM 11x6 prop. Runs like a ST-46. Since it is a ringed/bb engine it has not needed the long break in times that my iron pistion Enyas seem to like.

      Can you remember what fuel and prop you ran on the #6001.

It's a loooooong time ago now but I remember the fuel I used was just 75/25 all castor and I think the prop was a wide blade 11x6, probably a Top Flite or whatever was locally available at the time. Nothing fancy at all. After a couple of hundred hours it was no longer giving one flick starts (although once running it was still as good as ever) so I fitted new rings to cure it. Mine being the first version it had twin rings, the later version (from about '73) had a single ring like the new 60-IIIB.
