ENYA 45 bb [ 6001 ] : Props & RPM ?
« on: November 20, 2010, 01:37:51 AM »
Greetings guys from a drizzly Charente.

Advice needed please regarding my Enya 45 [ 6001 ].

Which prop' would you recommend please ?

What launch RPM would you expect ?

On the bench , my well run-in example turns a 12x5 Graupner prop' at a steady 8,700 4-stroke. Is this about right ?

I'm using a strap-on tongue muffler , 23% lube' in the fuel [ 50/50 ] and 5% nitro.

Any contributions would be appreciated ,

Robin.

I updated from a Merco 35 to one of these Enyas back in about '70 and found it utterly reliable. Several times I was asked how I got it to run as well as the ST 46 and all I could say was I filled it with my 75/25 all castor fuel, flicked it and flew :). From memory I think I used a 12x6 cut down to 11x6 but launch revs are unknown because we never used tachos back then. I ran mine for a couple of hundred hours before it became necessary to flick it a few times to get it started so I fitted new rings. Once running it was still as good as ever but the one flick start was a matter of pride for everyone. There were two versions of the 45, the early one (like mine) has twin rings while the later one (from about '72) used a single ring.

Where did you get your tongue muffler from, Robin?  I'll be needing one for a .45 6001 soon...

Hi Robin,

There are two Enya 45 6001, one with Ball Bearings and the other is a Plain Bearing,  which one you have?

I am familiar with  45 6001 with bearings. I  Used 7.5mm venturi, Top Flite 12x6 prop or APC 11x7 and 10%-15% Nitro with most oil been synthetic. Mine did not like Castor oil, it would overheat.  Using Heli Fuel all synthetic and Byron Traditional 10/20 worked  the best.  I was told no to use all synthetic that this would ruin the engine, but I used this engine for 3 years flying every weekend and it is still running mighty well. Got it used from Robert Compton, which was nice to meet in Florida many moons ago. This engine became very special to me, because I won most of the trophies.

The engine did not like restrictive mufflers, the original one and the new one from Enya did not work well for me.  The old Dubro  Muff-L-Aire, or something like that, worked the best among the very few mufflers I tried, it is heavy but I needed that extra weight in the Pathfinder Nose any way.

Launch RPM was about 8300rpms with the Top flite 12x6 and about 7600rpms with the APC 11x7.

Macs Produtct has a new line of Stunt Muffler that seems to be low restriction  and they have an adapter plate for the Enya 45 6001.

Another muffler it may work well are the ones Randy Sell. You can get the original Enya clamp and use the Enya SS50 61CX Aeroproduct tube muffler with it.

My friend Francis turned me on to the Enya 45 6001 motor, I have enjoyed flying it ever since.  You might want to try the RSM 12 X 5.5 prop as this has turned out to be a a very good combo here in Hawaii.  We also use the 003 Sig R/C long plug.  I think your fuel range is fine, I used 15% nitro 17% syn. fuel with two ounces of Randy Smith's AERO-1 and 5ozs of Castor oil added to complete the fuel blend.

Aloha,

Mike

Very much obliged to you guys for your contributions.

Just to answer a couple of points :

The Tongue Muffler [ strap-on ] came from Mr. Leonard Neumann . It's great for Enya 35 series as well [ 5224/5225 ] .

I seem to remember him mentioning it was one originally designed to fit an early ST61 , but I'd check that out with Leonard. He's very helpful.

Martin , my 45/6001 has ball bearings.

Thanks fellas ,

Robin
