Hi Guys,
Just wanted to say thanks to all my buddies who helped me get my Enya 40 XZS straightened out at Brodak's (Bob Hudak, Mark Gerber, Len Harding, and Alan Brickhaus).
Here's the setup:
APC 11/5 prop.
Thunderbolt R/C Long w/idle bar plug. (Hot plug needed, Bob also suggested Merlin 2005 or 2009)
5% nitro / 23% oil half synthetic half castor.
Add some ArmorAll to fuel for anti-foaming.
Launch at 9200-9300 rpm.
I also put in the extra head shim included with the engine. It is using about 3 1/2 ounces for the pattern, I think I could get by with 3 1/4 ounces.
Thanks again Guys!!

Great info. I have been having some issues with my XZS-will try your set-up. I had gone to 5% but don't think I was using enough prop. This is one strong engine, thanks for posting. 8)

The Enya 40XZ is one of my favorite engines, at at the last contest I use it, a Judge that only flies electric came to me and said "I have never seen a glow engine run as precisely as this, amazing flight!"
This is what I have:
Pathfinder 53Oz
Optional Enya 7.5mm Venturi (Enya NVA is thicker then OS)
Fuel 10% nitro 23% oil half synthetic half castor.
3.1 Oz for 6:20 min flight
APC 12x4
62' lines eye to eye
Stock Muffler
Here are some videos of my friend Jorge with his Enya 40XZ, he had just learned to complete the pattern then.

I've just started using mine, and am very impressed with it. My setup is quite similar to Chris's - APC 11x5, 5/11/11 fuel, Enya #3 plug, stock muffler and venturi (with a kit Vector 40 - great combination). That gave me a perfect run the very first time I tried it. I was very surprised at how little fuel it needs for the pattern - it doesn't really seem to use much more than my SS30. I just wish I had more of the things, rather than the motley collection of 35s-45s I've accumulated over recent years.

Just tried Chris's set-up. Great improvement from what I was getting with a smaller diameter prop. This is an excellent if sometimes overlooked stunt engine IMHO. 8)
-
Does the lap time drop by using the larger diameter prop?
-
There is probably some change but you don't really want to adjust your lap time that way. Prop diameter is more about providing the correct load to the engine. Instead you should change prop pitch to adjust lap time.
That all basically comes from Randy Smith's engine tuning tips at the top of the section.

Here’s my setup after recently replacing an OS 40FP with an Enya 40XZS on a well worn Vector 40 ARF – and flying to 3rd place in a local F2B comp today. ;D
We have a handicap system for the local F2B comps to encourage newer flyers...this encouragement certainly works & lots of practice is needed to maintain scores as the handicap progressively reduces.
7.5mm venturi
Enya #3 Plug
0.3mm Head Shim
49 Oz dry weight
Side to Rear Header & Muffler with rubber extension (Randy’s combo) - keeps the Vector clean!
Top Flite 10x6 PowerPoint Wood Prop
60’6” x 0.015” lines
Launch @ 9,850 RPM
5.3s Laps
3-1/4 Oz of 10/10/10 Fuel for a 6.5 minute flight.
2-2-2 Run, with occasional blip of a 4 at bottom of manoeuvres
This Engine has just shy of 7hrs running & has bags of compression. Readily runs 2-2-2 or 4-2-4 depending on Prop & RPM range selection.
Cheers all,
Richard

Pretty amazing lil'engine! people have been reporting good results with all sorts of setups and props like 10x6 10.5x4.5 11,5x4, 11x5 12x4.....

Is the engine mtg bolt pattern for Enya same as OS FP 40 to install in the Vector ARF?

No.
The bolt pattern for 40 XZS is the same as OS 32F, etc,.

Aki, I want 40XZS but have never seen one....

Well the Vector 40 has been temporarily retired due to ARF Lead-Out crimp failure during pre-flight checks - better then than during flight! This ARF took me from just flying loops to contesting the full F2B pattern so all's good.
The 40xz has now been transferred to a back-up Pathfinder ARF & trimming is underway - the APC 11x4 APC seems a good fit on shorter 60'6" x .015" lines. Will post details once this is set-up for the next local contest.
Cheers,
Richard

Good job catching the problem on the ground instead of airborne.
I've just been trying out an APC 11.5x4 with the 40XZS/Vector - very happy with it, if anything even better than the 11x5 I've been using for a while.
Are you going to have a fly at the NSW champs in June, Richard?
-
Hi Steve,
Yes I plan to fly at the NSW State Champs in June. Not sure what I'll be flying though - am hoping to have a new .60 size ship ready by then. #^
Cheers,
Richard

I assume that the Enya 40 XZ is essentially the same engine, but with an R/C carb? I ask because I know where I can get a new one! Which is the best Enya venturi to convert to the XZS specification?

Yep, same basic engine. Mine came with a 7mm venturi, so that'd be a good starting point; 7.5 should work fine as well. Do yourself a favour and be sure to get the "Pro NVA" rather than the standard one.

Well my Pathfinder ARF / Enya 40xz Combo seems to like an APC 10.5x6 Prop on those shorter lines using a 3oz tank to complete the pattern in just over 6 minutes. This is on 10% Nitro / 20% Synthetic Oil Fuel.
Gained a 2nd place in a windy local F2B contest with it today #^. This prop also brings the launch RPM down to around 9,250 reducing vibration of the hollow ARF fuselage - fuel bubbling had been causing Engine cut-outs during inverted manoeuvres at higher RPMS.

Congratulation for the 2nd place in tough conditions! Enya engines perform quite well in windy conditions and thats why I like them so much.
Are you running in 4-2-4 or 4-4-4?
Here on my end, I never had trouble with fuel bubbling with the 40XZ in high rpm, it is the smoothest engine I have tested in my Pathfinder, but I sure did have this annoying problem with other engines. I guess it depends on the wood on the nose.

Where can these engine be purchased, in the USA preferably??
Thanks

Unfortunately they are not available now, perhaps Enya will remake them.
