Dooling .29 and ST .29 RV running tips??
« on: July 28, 2022, 11:16:14 AM »
       Hello All:

I have decided that is is time to run these engines.  They both may require pressure fuel feed provisions.  Any unique information as to how to do this this?

       Tia,

       Frank

The ST29RV might have a boss for a timed pressure tap on the back plate you can tap out 6-32 or, you'll need a fuel nipple with the same metric thread as the back plate bolt on the bypass side.

There's always the bladder tank option.

You can also use a squeeze bulb connected directly to the spray bar and control the fuel flow by hand.

The Dooling 29 does not require pressure to run.  Lots of speed flyers got by just fine with just an ordinary suction fuel tank.  For ease of starting, you should run the Dooling with a 10" wood prop to keep RPM down.  If you want speed, run a smaller prop, but use an electric start for safety.

the Dooling Will Not Run very good on suction if it has the origanal 2 piece needle valve assby . if u use a full body needle valve assbly it will run ok.a fox combat 4-40 pressure fitting will work good in the upper transfer side rear backplate hole in place of the 4/40 screw.make sure the screw hole is drilled all the way through  i dont know anyone that ran a Dooling29 on suction

the Dooling 29 will not like a 10 in prop .a good all round prop would be in the 8/8 range.back in the day they ran 55/65 %nitro with 7/9-7/10 props for speed and 8/7 tp 8/7-8/8 props cut down as needed

same is true for the S/T for props  RAD

      Hi:

      Thanks for the replies.

Will these engines do a 4-2-4 break?  Just kidding! Lol

Think its the 21/46 intake that will go in the 21/29 . You need around 3/16 in. bore . For ' B ' team race . !

This is Phil Staples Kiwi ' B ' 21 - 29 RV device . bout 115 mph . They used ABC ' std ' liners . The PIPE liners
the port timing is lower transfer - higher exhaust port , TOP EDGE . If the TOP of the PORTS & the PISTON
coincide ( The Top of the Trans. is tapered , so the top top edge ! ) together its not the pipe liner .

If the Trans. Closer before the Ex , its PIPE timed . But ancient conservative timing , so no problem unpiped .  :P

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This later version with the small port & flange came in piped , unpiped , Steel & A B C .  The EARLIER
Std Timing Steel Liner versions got a LARGE Ex Port in the Case & no flange . You wanna pull 18.000 rpm on the ground , or 16.000 at least .
The Thinned Bartels F Glass 8 x 8 trimmed to 7 1/2 was pretty much the standard prop . Itll pick up a few thousand  r p m in the air .

And KEEP YOUR FINGERS OUT OF IT . pay to wear a glove & or use a chicken stick .

June 1975 Aeromudler magazine has got the hot tips from the Kiwi contingent . https://rcbookcase.com/details.php?publication_id=3276 PAGE 328 .

Observed these dashing dare devils and evesdropped on their ' timing ' , as they dialed ( Brown / Boulton ) in , at 118 mph , prior to the race .

Phil Staples was then the man to beat , so this is the record of their efforts , which we were witness to the results . Think thats the quickest race time for a ' B ' 21/29 on the planet , back then ? .

And HERE's were they did the damadge .

Aincient plans .

Bottom one might be the sort of thing to drop the Dooling in , to get parambulateing.
