Difference between O.S. E-2030 and 842 mufflers?
« on: September 07, 2018, 02:19:03 AM »
I crashed my Skyray three weeks ago, and besides bending the crankshaft and breaking the left side of the case, I took out my E-2030 muffler.  I bought a new crank and case from Tower, and have the engine rebuilt, but Tower had the E-2030 on back order.  Luckily, I have one coming in the mail, courtesy of the generosity of Mr. Holford.  I have an old blue .25 LA-S that I tried on the rebuilt Skyray, but it keeps speeding up after a few of laps, so it's not usable for me at this stage of the game.  It has the O.S. 842 muffler on it.  Does the 842 cause the engine to heat up and lean out?  What are the practical differences of construction between the two?  The blue .25 was originally an RC engine, so I imagine it didn't matter in its previous life.

Thanks,
Mark

What tank are you using?  I forget which Uniflow Im using on my Ringmaster.

I use the Blue .25LA with Tongue Muffler NOT ran on muffler pressure and she purs and breaks in manuevers.

Could be type of tank...tank height.... maybe venturi size.

Btw Im on my 12 hour drive home from west texas. Your muffler will be mailed in next few days :)

Jaime,

I'm using a Sullivan SS-4 four ounce clunk tank on muffler pressure that I short tank to two ounces.  It's the same setup on the same plane that had the silver 25 LA-s with the E-2030.  The only difference from the pre-crash configuration is the blue LA and the 842 muffler.  I guess the engine could be the issue, but I just gravitated to the muffler being the issue.

I really appreciate the muffler.  No hurry on it.  I'll figure out the blue LA thing, I hope.

The 842 muffler is much smaller. If you have the ability to run the engine with no muffler, that could at least get you in the ball park if your muffler is too restrictive.

The E-2030 muffler allows the pipe effect, the 842 muffler does not.

I don't know enough about the how, just that it is.

The 842 will make the motor overheat.  The volume is too small, and it is too short.  The problem probably occurred with a lot of FP40's and Tower 40's for the same reason.
The 20-30 muffler actually makes the motor run better than open exhaust, at least for stunt.  Same for the 30-40 on the bigger motors.
You can easily overload these motors with too much prop or pitch and too big a plane, which causes similar problems.
