Details of Randy's pipes?
« on: February 27, 2016, 07:55:57 AM »
I am in the process of drawing up a piped plane. I looked on Randy's site and couldn't find lengths or weights of the pipes that he has. Can anyone (Randy?) help me with this please.
It is a little difficult to draw the fuselage cross sections, or indeed length, and estimate the CG without some information. Forgive me if this data is on Randy's site, I couldn't find it. I am looking at engine capacities of 0.45 cu inches and upwards. I know that this is bigger than most piped engines, but I just want to experiment.

Andrew.

Andrew...I just calipered both my SV-11 and Eagle TS and the pipe tunnels are both around 1.65" wide at the aft end of the pipe. Tunnels are at about a 45deg. angle at the rear, and the bottom of both is completely open over the pipe, but covered over much of the header. Lengths from glowplug to the tip of the tunnel at bottom edge of the fugalug varies from 24.5" to 25.5". These are .46VF and PA .51 powered and both use Randy Aero pipes, so if you're using a .76, you'll need a bit more width and length. I have two different Randy Aero .75 pipes and a "Utah" pipe, which I could dig out and give you some dimensions on...they're bigger than the .46/.51 pipes. Let me know if you need those diameters.

The un-scientific measurement from spinner back to wing LE is 10" and 10.5" on the two. Depending on how heavy you build (both these are about 10 oz over ideal), it might be a good idea to add an inch to the nose length. If you build light, those dimensions should be fine.  y1 Steve

What Steve wrote is accurate  plus add this to it
The small pipe is 1.6 inch diameter at the fat rear part
46 to 60 pipe is 1.75 inches diameter at mid/rear
61-75 pipe is 1.85 inch diameter
you can add up to 2 inches additional length for the larger motors

I will look later to see if i have a gif to send

plus all of my plans for the Pipe ships have it drawn on them, in case you have access to them

Thank you Steve and Randy
Prompt answers to simple questions!  Maybe Randy you could give me some approx. weights for the 46  to 60 pipe and the 61 to 75 pipe. That should get me drawing again after a few calculations!

Thanks both, much appreciated.

Andrew.

P.S. Thanks Randy, my OS 35 CNC Muffler and rods turned up last week and they are just fine!
